Magnificat album
$16.59 Frederick Vogler and Takashi Kawai are the duo called Industrial Monk. Together they have combined the instrumentation and relative accessibility of 21st century ambient electronic beats with the melorhythmic richness of the Gregorian chant, which surfaced circa 600. The chants by the Los Angeles Chamber Singers ...
| | Chris Potter Traveling Mercies CD (2002)
Magnificat CD music
$12.65 Chris Potter gets more and more adventurous. On this follow-up to the strong Gratitude, the tenor and soprano saxophonist beefs up strong writing and heady group interplay with occasional sampled sounds and miscellaneous textures like clavinet and reed organ. True to form, he plays additional wind instruments -- alto flute and bass clarinet in this case -- and isn't afraid of overdubbing them to create lush orchestration, on tracks like "Snake Oil" and "Any Moment Now." On the haunting "Invisible Man" he even doubles the alto flute melody with his singing voice. Not until the fifth track, a Meters-like adaptation of the spiritual "Children Go," do you hear a 4/4 tempo; loping lines over odd meters prevail, with pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Scott Colley, ...
| | Eric Bibb Sisters & Brothers CD (2004)
Magnificat music CDs
$13.79 As its title implies, this is a spiritually based collaboration from three distinct -- even disparate -- yet surprisingly harmonious voices. Mostly, but not entirely acoustic, the trio of rootsy singers trade lead vocals on smooth jazz/blues ("Bessie's Dream"), folk-blues ("Good Stuff"), Delta blues ("Rolling Log"), gospel (an a cappella version of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's "Rock Daniel"), and combinations of those genres. On paper it sounds scattershot, but in actuality this is a thoughtfully paced combination of styles, united by three affecting voices. ...

| | Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet Conclave CD (2005) (Import) Netherlands
Magnificat CD music
$16.49 Trumpeter Brian Lynch has often played second fiddle to his Latin jazz A-lister friends. Be it with trombone giant Conrad Herwig, piano luminary Eddie Palmieri, or any of the host of New York Latin jazzers with whom Lynch has collaborated, the most notable records that he has appeared on have him listed after the word "featuring." The Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet features a group of players who are similarly stellar sidemen, who have backed the biggest artists in the genre, but whose names are not often seen in lights. With the release of Conclave, their day in the sun has come. This 2005 release ...

$13.05 | | John Zorn Unknown Masada CD (2003)
Magnificat album
$13.09 OK, by now everyone familiar with John Zorn's Masada project should realize that it's actually a songbook, and not a band per se. Unknown Masada is the third installment in the Masada 10th Anniversary series, presenting tunes from the book that had not been recorded to this point. As you might expect, there is a tremendous amount of stylistic diversity here, from the very traditional sound of Julian Kytasty to the very untraditional sounds of Fantômas. In fact, listeners more familiar with The Circle Maker or Bar Kokhba might not be prepared for some of the hard rock treatments of some of these tunes. Zahava Seewald, Erik Friedlander's Topaz, and Kytasty represent the more traditional end of the spectrum, while Koby Israelite, Jon Madof, and Jamie Saft give more of a hard rock sound to their tracks. Wadada Leo Smith's track features a very spare trumpet melody over a queasy soundscape supplied by Ikue Mori. Fantômas takes the hard edge a step further (to be expected), but the prog rock feel of both Tatsuya Yoshida and Eyvind Kang is somewhat unexpected. In fact, Kang's treatment of "Belimah" almost sounds like a lost early-'70s King Crimson outtake! Track highlights include "Kinyan" (Friedlander), "Vehuel" (Dave Douglas, featuring Greg Tardy and Zorn himself), "Zarach" (Saft), and "Belimah" (Kang). The Zorn crowd tends to follow his every move and usually know what to expect; the uninitiated should ...
