Recorded live at the Blue Note, New York, New York from June 11-13, 1991. Includes liner notes by Donald Elfman.
For a 1991 gig at the Blue Note in New York, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton headed a nonet full of classic veterans that were termed "the Golden Men of Jazz": trumpeters Clark Terry and Harry "Sweets" Edison, tenors James Moody and Buddy Tate, trombonist Al Grey, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Grady Tate. Even with its many loose moments, these great players came up with some notable moments, including James Moody's humorous vocalizing on "Moody's Mood for Love" and particularly fine playing by Terry and Grey; Tate and Edison do show their age a bit, but are welcome participants in what must have been an occasion for celebration. ~ Scott Yanow

Lionel Hampton And The Golden Men Of Jazz: Live At The Blue Note album
$13.39 On All We Need, Antonio Hart takes a breather from his collaborations with the Dave Holland Quintet and offers this excellent recording that features a top-flight ensemble of jazz musicians on ten compositions. Written mainly by Hart and the awesome tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath of the Heath Brothers, the songs are straight-ahead jazz pieces that give plenty of blowing room for all musicians. In addition to Heath on tenor saxophone; Lonnie Plaxico on bass; Billy Kilson and Nasheet Waits on drums; Shedrick Mitchell on piano, Hammond B3, and Rhodes; Michael Philip ...
| | Thomas Marriott Individuation CD (2005)
Lionel Hampton And The Golden Men Of Jazz: Live At The Blue Note CD music
$15.39 The opening "Sing a Song" puts the focus on Thomas Marriott's trumpet tone and mostly features him playing long tones. The next two selections, "Domino City" and "Tout de Suite," are a bit of a contrast, for they showcase Marriott in a group that recalls Miles Davis' early fusion days, circa 1969-1971. Marriott and altoist Rick Mandyck, the latter on those two numbers but regrettably only one other cut, work together particularly well, and David Budway's Fender Rhodes piano is perfect for this setting. After the playful if slightly melancholy "Baby Mine," the driving "Mission" has Marriott and the returning Mandyck emulating the mid-'60s Miles Davis Quintet. The downbeat ballad "Love You Tonight," a spirited "Individuation," and a brooding "Returning" conclude the program. The performances are uplifted by the vibraphone of Joe Locke on four of the eight selections. Marriott is a versatile player with strong potential, and his thoughtful set grows in interest with each listening. ~ Scott Yanow
Trumpeter Thomas Marriott is one of the most exciting musicians to emerge on the national jazz scene in more than a decade. Solo efforts on his recent albums and performances with luminaries such as Rosemary Clooney, The Chico O’Farrell Orchestra, Ritchie Cole, Joe Locke & Kenny Kirkland, have gained him numerous awards and recognition throughout the music world. In 1999 he won the prestigious Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition sponsored by the International ...
