After years of session and live work (with Van Morrison, Jon Hendricks, John Lee Hooker), Lady Bianca made her solo debut with this 1995 record, released through Telarc. Though technically a blues record, Best Kept Secret actually reveals Bianca's roots in gospel and soul. Her voice is powerful enough to rank her with blues heavyweights like Koko Taylor, though she can also summon the simmering fire of Aretha Franklin (circa "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman") on a song like "Ooh, His Love Is So Good." Stanley Lippitt, Lady Bianca's main musical cohort on the record, proves to be a valuable addition, co-writing all the songs as well as arranging all the strings and horns (the latter to best effect on the excellent slow-burn Stax number "How Do I Tell My Little Sister?"). ~ John Bush
Personnel includes: Lady Bianca (vocals, piano), Carl Lockett (guitar), Dave Matthews (piano, Hammond organ), Tony Sanders (bass), Dave Rokeach (drums).
Living Blues (9-10/95, p.104) - "...Lady Bianca's contralto voice and the set's innovative arrangements make for a forward looking album that will find favor with fans of contemporary African-American music." Lady Bianca Best Kept Secret Songs Best Kept Secret Review

Best Kept Secret album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning ...

Best Kept Secret CD music
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues ...
| | Kool & The Gang State Of Affairs CD (1996)
Best Kept Secret music CDs
$5.65 With former lead singer James "J.T." Taylor rejoining his old band after a break of several years, hopes were high among Kool & the Gang fans that the reunited group could rejoin the ranks of hitmakers once again with State of Affairs. But the painful state of affairs revealed on this disappointing, sterile-sounding effort was that the Gang were trying too hard to show they could hang with the then-current batch of high-tech R&B chart-toppers. The supreme irony of clunky-sounding funk numbers like "Crabs in a Barrel" is that at the same time this album was released, soul revivalists like D'Angelo and Maxwell were making celebrated debuts with music that owed not a little to Kool & the Gang's sweaty '70s grooves. But the group missed that development completely, using robotic programmed rhythms to ruin ...

| | Chris Pickering Safer Place CD (2006) (Import) Australia; + Bonus CD
Best Kept Secret songs
$18.55 Chris Pickering is an alt.country singer/songwriter and guitarist based in Brisbane, Australia. A Safer Place is his debut long player, and follows the Hard to Find EP (released in June 2005). With producer Jonathan Burnside (Sleepy Jackson, Treetops) at the helm, Hard to Find had a distinctly country flavour. A Safer Place sees Pickering develop his trademark country roots, marinating them with lashings of savvy indie and folk-pop flavours. Embracing heartfelt themes and sweet melodies,Pickering and co-producer Emerson Bavinton (Gentle Ben & His Sensitive Side, Gorgeous) have crafted a refreshingly honest, innovative and beautiful debut - and what may be the perfect Sunday afternoon chillout record. Disarmingly sensitive and insightful, with frank and moving lyrics, A Safer Place meshes raw honesty with sophisticated yet uncomplicated melodies. The songs have an unnervingly personal impact - laid-back yet confrontational, introspective ...
