Although all eight selections on this CD have been played many times before (the only song not a boppish warhorse is John Lewis' "Milano"), altoist Frank Morgan makes each of the pieces sound fresh. As producer John Snyder is quoted in the liner notes, this is bop without cliches. Morgan, who is assisted by pianist Rodney Kendrick, drummer Leroy Williams and either Curtis Lundy or Ray Drummond on bass, digs into such songs as "Well You Needn't," "A Night In Tunisia" and an 11 « minute version of "Half Nelson," coming up with some surprising twists and plenty of viable ideas. A fine effort. ~ Scott Yanow

Q (5/97, p.124) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...the veteran altoist skims his way through some of bebop's greatest hits...treating them just as one does old friends; warmly and with due respect..." Down Beat (5/97, p.61) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...he surely stands at the top of the second tier of bebop players....Kendrick is an especially interesting pianist....His splashes of dissonance spice a fine bebop date." Bop!
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
Bop!
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. If Poco had arrived on the scene in the early '90s, they would have been kings of the country charts. Of course, without Poco, country music ...

Bop!
$19.79 Recorded between 1967 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Jim Ladd.
Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch the Earth" and "Wishful Sinful," as well as a handful of previously obscure rarities. Remastered and newly remixed ...

Bop!
$8.99 Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that meld together cooking son, jazz, Afro-Caribbean, and flamenco rhythms, in tunes by composers such as Lolita de la Colina, Virgilio and Homero Expósito, Ramón Perelló, the grand team of Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, Caetano Veloso (who makes a guest appearance), Maria Teresa Vera, Miguel Matamoros (who composed the title track), and others. Most are Cuban ballads. Guests such as Veloso, Paquito D'Rivera, Pancho Terry, Tata Güines, and El Niño Josele fall by on different tracks. And while the tunes are top-shelf and the guests make this a very special and historic occasion, it is the ...
