| | Oscar In Paris: Oscar Peterson Live At The Salle Pleyel CD Oscar Peterson Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Nonpareil pianist Oscar Peterson may have lost the use of his left hand following his stroke, but he's still got more technique and swing than most of the pianists out there. If you doubt that, check out this recording made in Paris in 1996 with his quartet. Peterson is a treasure, and his takes on these originals and standards offer ample evidence. ~ Ross Boissoneau

Oscar In Paris: Oscar Peterson Live At The Salle Pleyel music CDs
$9.59 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Kevin Mahogany's decision to cover Motown hits in a jazz setting stems from his desire to not only increase the audience for jazz, but to add new material to the music's repertoire, in addition to the established standards. The results are ear-opening, particularly for those who never seriously listened to the likes of Marvin Gaye or Smokey Robinson. Mahogany, whose richly textured baritone helped him become one of the top male jazz vocalists to emerge during the 1990s, arranged several of the tracks, including the stark "My World Is Empty Without You," where his only backing is provided by bassist Melissa Slocum and percussionist Don Alias, as well as a swinging treatment of "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game." The singer is backed by a quartet of singers for catchy doo wop interpretations of "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" and "Reach Out I'll Be There." Pianist James Weidman, who provides just the right support on six of the CD's 11 tracks, is the sole accompanist and arranger of "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)," reworking this huge hit ...

$13.85 The Blue Note Six, a fine Dixieland/swing band from Austria, was founded in 1966. On this well-rounded program taken from a studio session in 1999 and live appearances in 1995, 1997, and 1998, the group plays Dixieland standards, heated obscurities, some swing tunes, a four-song ...
| | Scott Amendola Believe CD (2005)
Oscar In Paris: Oscar Peterson Live At The Salle Pleyel album
$14.29 Drummer Scott Amendola maintains his high standards on his third recording as a leader (and his second on the Cryptogramophone label). In short, this is another great release, filled with passion, drama, humor, and the sundry joys of superior collective improvisation. As always with Amendola, eclecticism is assumed, but he enriches the mix this time by including Jeff Parker from Tortoise, who provides a second electric guitar alongside Nels Cline, while Jenny Scheinman's violin completes the string trio front line. In addition to his drum/percussion duties, Amendola also triggers some interesting loops and samples and plays electric mbira and melodica. Scheinman's violin attack is more or less traditional (although her playing is marvelous, as usual), but Parker and Cline coax some rather distinctive sounds from their instruments, using a large bag of effects. Cline further displays his versatility by playing both six- and 12-string acoustic and electric guitars as well as a lap steel. In less sophisticated hands, the combination of two electric guitars and a violin might have resulted in an undifferentiated mush, but the collective sensitivity to timbre and texture displayed here allows the three instruments to operate almost as a horn section, or to improvise against each other's lines to excellent effect. High points are almost too numerous to mention on this very generous recording, whose nine songs clock in at just under 70 minutes. "Oladipo," which is dedicated to the pioneering Afro-beat drummer Tony Allen, has a strong, infectious African groove. "Shady" is a nifty piece of Ornette Coleman-style harmolodics, begun with a free-form, arrhythmic dialogue between Parker and Cline before giving way to the boppish theme. Scheinman takes the ...
