Four great blues harmonica players (James Cotton, Billy Branch, Charlie Musselwhite, and Sugar Ray Norcia) are featured in various combinations on this spirited disc, backed by a four-piece rhythm section (with guitarist Kid Bangham and pianist Anthony Geraci). Cotton and Norcia have solo pieces, seven numbers feature two harmonicas, and the lengthy low-down blues "Harp to Harp" has all four of the harmonica players taking turns soloing. Much of the material is jazz-oriented, including "The Hucklebuck," "TD's Boogie Woogie," and "Route 66," and the majority of the selections are instrumentals. Each of the harmonica players sounds inspired and the results are consistently exciting and swinging. ~ Scott Yanow

HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. Best known for fronting Texas legends The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Kim Wilson spent much of the '90s balancing his time between his old group and kick-starting his solo career. In parlaying the experience of playing an average of over 200 dates annually, Wilson's first live solo release SMOKIN' JOINT finds him serving up club dates recorded in Phoenix and Hermosa Beach, California in 1999 and 2000. With the Hollywood Fats rhythm section of bassist Larry Taylor and drummer Richard Innes anchoring the proceedings on both gigs, Wilson cuts loose on a pair of covers-heavy sets that find him dabbling in a variety of blues styles.
