Michael Franks Rendezvous in Rio CD (2006) Top Seller
Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins album for sale Michael Franks' laid-back vocals have made him the choice of a new generation of cool school attendees. With Rendezvous in Rio, his debut release for Koch Records, Franks continuously shows why he is still at the top of his game with brand-new songs that will soothe, undo your stresses, or put you in a romantic mood. The various musical styles on the CD include two Brazilian sambas, one titled "Under the Sun," pointing you toward the Southern Hemisphere and the warmth of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. A master of phrasing and elongated notes, Franks tells his great stories in several tempos that literally have you wanted to take this journey with him. "Rendezvous in Rio" starts with Café's percussive whistle and the rhythmic flow of Romero Lubambo's guitar. Chris Hunter's sax and flute solos also heighten the imagery of Franks' sexy vocals. "The Cool School" starts with the beautiful guitar accompaniment of Chuck Loeb and continues under Franks' vocals with a hushed flow of cool/smooth riffs that make this song one of the best on the CD. With the artistry of such respected contemporary jazz artists as Jeff Lorber, Jimmy Haslip, Chuck Loeb, and Alex Al and the lilt of the carnival whistle, Michael Franks has conspired to entertain you, and has succeeded. You're sure to enjoy this very special Rendezvous in Rio. Recommended. ~ Paula Edelstein

Rippingtons Life in the Tropics CDs (2000)
Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins buy CD music Life in the Tropics -- the first Peak Records release for the Rippingtons -- features guitarist Russ Freeman and is a great smooth jazz celebration of rhythmic delights that resemble the tropical splendor of an island oasis. The natural beauty of each composition is reflected by the great talents of the Rippingtons: Kim Stone on bass, Dave Kochanski on keyboards, Ramon Yslas on percussion, and Dave Hooper on drums, along with special guests the great saxophonists Dave Koz, Eric Marienthal, and Paul Taylor, keyboardist Bob James, and guitarist Peter White. The centerpiece of this CD is "Love Child," a sensuous mid-tempo ballad that alternates the brilliant sax work of Marienthal and Taylor as Freeman strums an emotional string sonnet under soulful synths and keyboards. The romantic vocals of Howard Hewitt on "I Found Heaven" invite you to rediscover his intense passion for a great love ballad. Its lyrics convey the excellent songwriting abilities of Freeman and Gary Brown and their ability to connect to the emotional melorhythms of the listener. The fresh sounds revealed on Life in the Tropics are sure to please you because of their melodic elements, rhythms, brass, and great guitar of Russ Freeman. ~ Paula Edelstein

Fourplay Yes, Please CD (2000) Top Seller
Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins songs YES, PLEASE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
This is jazz lite, no doubt about it--the four storied musicians who make up Fourplay would be the first to tell you so. But YES, PLEASE is far from the overripe, cloying tones employed by so many "pop jazz" artists. Instead, it's full of subtlety, emotive, carefully considered solo statements, and tunes intended for more than coffee- commercial soundtrack music.
Though he contributes the least in terms of original compositions, veteran guitarist Larry Carlton offers some of the most soulful playing here. His warm-but-precise tone is simultaneously organic and cerebral as he improvises over the alternately funky and balladic motifs of the tunes. Keyboardist Bob James provides the same indefatigable blend of catchiness and taste that's made him so successful for decades. The rhythm section of Harvey Mason and Nathan East, who've backed a thousand contemporary jazz artists, keep the rhythms visceral without losing any of the more intimate nuances.
Recorded at Sear Sound and Remidi Sound, New York, New York; Larrabee East, Capitol Studios, and Pyramid Studios, Los Angeles, California.
Personnel: Nathan East (vocals); Larry Carlton (guitar); Bob James (piano); Ken Freeman (synthesizer); Harvey Mason, Sr. (drums).

George Benson Absolute Benson CD (2000)
Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins CD music This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
ABSOLUTE BENSON was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album.
With the help of his longtime friend and producer, Tommy LiPuma, George Benson crafts a guitar heavy, yet commercially viable album with ABSOLUTE BENSON. Benson here delivers guitar work similar to his '70s CTI releases; his guitar licks are lyrical, logical, and liquid, and his sparse vocals are also impressive.
ABSOLUTE BENSON kicks off with a Latin-flavored cover of Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto," and follows with its companion piece, the equally Latin-influenced "El Barrio." Benson also covers material by Ray Charles ("Come Back Baby"), Stevie Wonder ("Lately"), and by guitarist Marc Antoine ("Jazzenco"). Joe Sample's contributions are "Deeper Than You Think," "One on One," and "Hipping the Hop," and Benson and Sample even team up on the composition of the funky album closer, "Medicine Man." Benson really seems to enjoy himself on this recording, and he seems to enjoy playing with the wonderful musicians that join him. ABSOLUTE BENSON solidifies Benson's position as a master among smooth jazz guitarists.

Caribbean Jazz Project Caribbean Jazz Project: Island Stories CD (1997)
Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins buy CD music The second recording by this co-op group (which has three leaders in steel drummer Andy Narell, Dave Samuels on marimba and vibes and Paquito D'Rivera tripling on alto, clarinet and soprano) crosses a lot of boundaries. Designed as a musical tour through Latin America, the music ranges from a tribute to Cal Tjader and Astor Piazzolla's "Libertango" to "Andalucia" (better known as "The Breeze and I") and "Bluellespie" (which fuses together parts of several Dizzy Gillespie-associated songs). The blend between the vibes and steel drums is unique, the rhythm section (pianist Dario Eskenazi, bassist Oscar Stagnaro, drummer Mark Walker and percussionist Pernell Saturnino) is versatile and exciting, and D'Rivera's soprano playing in particular is impressive. Easily recommended to all jazz listeners. ~ Scott Yanow

Ronny Jordan Brighter Day CD (1999)
Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins songs A BRIGHTER DAY was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
In the early-'90s acid jazz scene, stylish Brits like Brand New Heavies and Ronny Jordan experimented in fusing jazz with elements of funk and hip hop. On his Blue Note debut, Ronny Jordan displays an expanding vocabulary of smooth jazz talk and world beat accents without sacrificing his funky, streetwise slang.
This self-taught guitarist breezes into the "Mambo Inn" for Latin spice, over to "New Delhi" for an acoustic Middle Eastern rendezvous, and on to a beefy B3 organ BBQ that grounds his mellifluous guitar flow on "London Lowdown," with the ease of a jet-setting, six-string seducer. Guests at the party include Roy Ayers adding his intoxicating vibes to a champagne-chilled cover of his own "Mystic Voyage," renowned drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts giving "5/8 Flow" its straight-ahead Brubeck-like kick, and rapper Mos Def dropping rhymes over DJ-Spinna's remix of the title track. The acid jazz craze may have fizzled, but Jordan keeps pouring smoothies from his golden-toned guitar blender that have enough adventurous flavors to satisfy.
Engineers include: Steve Lewinson, Steve Hardy, Steve Parr.
