The high spirited debut of Portland's explosive bluegrass rockers, Golden Delicious' Old School is one of the best syntheses of country spirit and punk-rock energy to date. Obviously not afraid to step outside of traditional bluegrass conventions by adding drums, electric guitar, and tackle themes normally outside of the genre, Golden Delicious also lets guitarist Pete Krebs step away from his more serious singer/songwriter persona and cut loose on some country classics. More than anything, it's obvious Golden Delicious were having a great time recording this album. The absolutely infectious and hilarious "Hot Corn, Cold Corn," which sounds to be on the brink of collapsing into laughter at any moment, as well as irresistibly catchy "Low Down Dog," are both good bets to be stuck in your head for days. The carnival atmosphere of the slightly off-kilter "HooDoo Bash" and a sincere cover of Ernest Tubb's "Walk Across Texas" make sure that the mood of the album never grows stale. Though many bands have tried to translate the seemingly endless energy of bluegrass music into a rock format, for some reason, it rarely works. While Golden Delicious won't be confused with Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys anytime soon, they do have the rare combination of exemplary instrumental skills, good harmonies, intelligent song selection, and enough irreverent attitude to make Old School an infinitely listenable and enjoyable experience. ~ Matt Fink

| | Flaming Lips Soft Bulletin CD (1999)
Old School CD music
$8.65 Recorded in Cassadaga, New York, New York between April 1997 and February 1999.
With their multi-disc opus ZAIREEKA (four CDs meant to be played simultaneously on four different players), the Flaming Lips radically expanded the scope of their melancholy psychedelia, as pop tunes became modernist soundscapes, part-Pink Floyd, part-John Cage. Obviously, the experience greatly influenced the band's direction, because on THE SOFT BULLETIN the Lips again scrap the guitar-bass-drum rock standard, sculpting instead ...

Old School music CDs

In what was one of the best, though unjustly overlooked, albums of 1999, Pete Krebs delivers his most varied and accessible album to date. Working with an excellent backing band, including former Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd, Krebs crafted some of the sharpest ...

| | Jon Tiven Blue Guru CD (1996)
Old School album
$10.99 Known for his production work with everyone from Frank Black to Nick Lowe, guitarist Jon Tiven also makes bluesy pop/rock in his spare time. Working with former Arrows frontman Alan Merrill, drummer Todd Snare (Wilson Pickett, P.M. Dawn), and Sally Tiven (his wife and former B.B. King bassist), Tiven has a wonderful talent for soulful blues-rock without a trace of needless guitar exercises. Tiven is all about the songs and puts more effort into writing good hooks and riffs than anything else. That may partially be why his talents as a guitarist are so underrated, but even his incidental playing on songs like "I Smell Smoke" is littered with perfect little flourishes and fills. His talents as a lyricist are not quite as impressive, but the excellent performance from Merrill makes lines like, "Ooh honey, this party's off the ...
| | Alan Jackson Good Time CD (2008)
Old School CD music
$10.89 On his first traditional country album since 2004's WHAT I DO, Alan Jackson steps outside the comfortable routine he's created for himself in favor of creating a more personal and introspective work. The first album on which Jackson has written all of the songs all by himself, GOOD TIME is Jackson's most autobiographical album by some distance. "Small Town Southern ...
| | Stevie Nicks Bella Donna CD (1981)
Old School music CDs
$9.35 Following up strong on the weak sales and confused reviews of Fleetwood Mac's misunderstood experimental extravaganza, TUSK, was Stevie Nicks's first solo album, BELLA DONNA. The 1981 record featured two smash singles, "Edge of Seventeen" and the Tom Petty duet "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," that reaffirmed that the Arizona native was one of the biggest female stars of the era. The surprising ...
