| | Louis Armstrong West End Blues: Very Best Of The Hot CD (1994) (Import) United Kingdom
Transparent In Your Presence songs
$11.29 MCI import collecting best of the hot fives and sevens; includes "Basin Street Blues."
WEST END BLUES is an almost perfect compilation of Louis Armstrong's early work. Culled from the first studio recordings with his own groups--the incomparably innovative Hot Fives and Sevens--WEST END BLUES focuses on what is unquestionably Armstrong's most inspired, ground-breaking material. There is not one of these 24 tracks where his trumpet doesn't swing like a fist, or project its shining tone and gorgeous vibrato. Satch is in prime singing form too, on tracks such as "I'm Not Rough," "I'm A Ding Dong Daddy" and "Heebie Jeebies" (which features the first ever scat solo).
The instrumentals far outweigh the vocal numbers however, and it is on tunes like "Potato Head Blues," "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" and "Beau Koo Jack" that one truly marvels not only at Armstrong's prodigious gifts, but those of sidemen like guitarist Lonnie Johnson and pianist Earl Hines. WEST END BLUES is soulful, intelligent, eminently enjoyable and wholly original. What can touch Armstrong's version of King Oliver's "West End Blues?" Outside of owning all of of the original discs on which these recordings first appeared, one would be hard pressed to find a better sample of Armstrong's earliest, and finest, period.
Louis Armstrong's first solo recordings with the Hot Fives and Sevens are among the most important and defining documents of American pop music. In a series of sessions in the mid- 1920's, Armstrong revolutionized the world of music with his improvisatory fire, his rhythmically syncopated horn attack, his beacon-like tone and his sophisticated, yet irrepressibly spirited approach to singing. In short, these sessions yielded the blueprint of jazz, and WEST END BLUES is a superb documentation.
Excellent sound reproduction highlights the vibrancy and cohesiveness of the ensembles, which feature piano, banjo and brass variations. Of course, every cut is a classic, and many are permanently ensconced in the pantheon of all-time jazz standards. It would be impossible to imagine music history without "Heebie Jeebies" (featuring the first ever recorded scat solo), "Rockin' Chair," "Cornet Chop Suey," and the magnificent "Potato Head Blues," just to ...
| | Grant Green Green Street CD (1961) Remastered
Transparent In Your Presence album
$8.85 As a trio, this edition of guitarist Grant Green's many ensembles has to rank with the best he had ever fronted. Recorded on April Fool's Day of 1961, the band and music are no joke, as bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Dave Bailey understand in the most innate sense how to support Green, lay back when needed, or strut their own stuff when called upon. Still emerging as an individualist, Green takes further steps ahead, without a pianist, saxophonist, or -- most importantly -- an organist. His willpower drives this music forward in a refined approach that definitely marks him as a distinctive, immediately recognizable player. It is also a session done in a period when Green was reeling in popular demand, as this remarkably is one of six recordings he cut for Blue Note as a leader in 1961, not to mention other projects as a sideman. To say his star was rising would be an understatement. The lean meatiness of this group allows all three musicians to play with little hesitation, no wasted notes, and plenty of soul. Another aspect of this studio date is the stereo separation of Green's guitar in one speaker, perhaps not prevalent in modern recordings, but very much in use then. Check out the atypical (for Green) ballad "'Round About Midnight," as the guitarist trims back embellishments to play this famous melody straight, with a slight vibrato, occasional trills, and a shuffled bridge. The trio cops an attitude similar to Dizzy Gillespie for the introduction to "Alone Together," with clipped melody notes and a bass filler from Tucker. Three of ...

Transparent In Your Presence CD music
$16.65 Originally released in 1969, Friends, The Easybeats' last album, was a curiously half-baked and deflated affair, despite some interesting moments. The Australian group's trademark peppiness gave way to a world-weary tone, perhaps as a result of their roller-coaster ride through near-Beatles-like fame in their native land and limited success elsewhere. Apparently much of this collection was actually half-finished demos, which accounts for the fairly sparse feel on several tracks. The ...
