| | Sondheim: A Musical Tribute Soundtrack CD
A two-disc recording of a special benefit show held Mar 11, 1973, featuring many of the original performers from Stephen Sondheim musicals, reprising their performances of his songs. Thus, the album is a kind of "Sondheim's Greatest Hits," with the added excitement of being a one-time event. Originally isssued as a two-LP set by Warner in 1973, it was reissued by RCA on CD/cassette with previously unreleased tracks. ~ William Ruhlmann

John Barry's fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It's also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early/mid-'60s. The main title theme uses some of those devices -- dense, heavy string passages adjacent to trumpet calls -- but it is hardly representative of the full score. The real heart of Dances With Wolves is the pensive, tragic "John Dunbar Theme," which is far closer in spirit to Barry's music for ...

$9.09 When Spike Lee decided to score his basketball drama He Got Game with the music of Aaron Copland, it was an unusually bold move, even for an unusually bold director. Copland's music has always been associated with the American heartland. Just take a look at the track titles on the soundtrack: "The Open Prairie," "Appalachian Spring," "John Henry," "Lincoln Portrait," "Hoe-Down." Yes, Copland was a film composer, but for movies about rural or small-town white folks, like Of Mice and Men and Our Town. He Got Game is ...
