This 13-tracker finds the Savoy Brown lead guitarist and British blues legend in a solo acoustic mode, moving between guitar, dobro, harmonica and piano. Eight of the selections are Simmonds originals, and the covers (Mance Lipscomb's "Sugar Babe," Leroy Carr's "Alabama Woman," Fats Domino's "Going Home" and Walter Roland's "House Lady Blues") are not the usual suspects one usually counts up when it comes time to do a few of your old favorites in this kind of setting. Simmonds' acoustic tone throughout is fat, rich and present, with acoustic 12-string being featured on "Bad Morning" and nice slide dobro work on "Blind Alley." While Simmonds makes no attempt to hide his British roots vocally by submerging it in mush-mouthed crooning and sore-throated hollering, his vocals (and several of the guitar filigrees) also lend this album a decided British folk air as well. ~ Cub Koda

The title is simple, and it describes exactly what you'll get -- two discs and 19 tracks of the Black Crowes in concert, tearing through fan favorites and chart hits. The album is culled from a series of concerts the group did on their farewell 2001 tour, with Rich Robinson sequencing the entire thing to flow close to an actual concert, right down to his brother Chris' winding, sometimes embarrassing stage patter. Though this isn't as gutsy or revelatory as the dynamite live album with Jimmy Page, it's still a really good live album, finding the band in fine form -- Chris is in good voice, the band rocks hard, and the versions here, while not drastically different than the album versions, find the band stretching out where necessary. In short, it's nuthin' fancy, just what a good rock & roll band does. And the Black Crowes are certainly a good rock & roll band, with a deep catalog of strong songs and a good sound, all evident here. True, this is pretty much the province of the dedicated, but those that are devoted fans will find this to be a sweet swan song. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
In early 2002, the Black Crowes posted a cryptic message on their website stating the band was "taking a hiatus." This translated to founding member and drummer Steve Gorman leaving the band and Chris Robinson dabbling with a solo debut. In the meantime, brother Rich went through tapes of the band's 2001 tour to compile the two-CD collection LIVE. The result is a 19-song collection that draws from all the band's studio albums (minus 1999's criminally underrated BY YOUR SIDE). Casual fans will be thrilled by killer versions of radio hits like "She Talks To Angels" and "Twice As Hard" while die-hards will undoubtedly have flashbacks to live shows past thanks to in-concert favorites "Sting Me" and "Remedy."

Herbert Von Karajan had already celebrated his 25th anniversary leading the Berlin Philharmonic when this recording of one of classical music's most recognizable pieces was captured. Another longstanding collaborator of Karajan's, the Wiener Singverein, are the chorus for this interpretation of Beethoven's masterpiece. This 1983 performance was recorded over three September nights in Berlin. Featured vocalists include soprano Leila Cuberli and tenor Vinson Cole.
