For the soundtrack to director Terrence Malick's acclaimed 1998 Vietnam War film, THE THIN RED LINE, veteran composer Hans Zimmer crafted a subtle, understated score that garnered an Oscar nomination. With their string-laden, almost-ambient moments and chant-filled passages, these pieces provide a poignant counterpoint to the on-screen violence, and perfectly echo the more meditative scenes in the movie, as on the gorgeously serene "Light." Hans Zimmer's Oscar-nominated score for reclusive director Terrence Malick's ambitious James Jones adaptation -- only the director's third film in 25 years -- is one of his most subtle and sophisticated yet. Then again, it's not as if the German-born composer has ever been known as a master of bombast or overstatement -- Max Steiner he is not (among other works, he penned the award-winning soundtracks for Rain Man and The Lion King). Unlike the scores for most other war movies (The Thin Red Line is set during World War II), the action in Malick's elegiac epic is driven mostly by the action itself (heated exchanges between characters, sudden eruptions of devastating violence) and not the music. The soundtrack, which consists primarily of long, string-laden pieces, also includes one of the film's mesmerizing chants, which were so popular that a separate recording, Chants From The Thin Red Line, consisting entirely of chants by the Melanesian Brotherhood and the Choir of All Saints, was released in conjunction with this recording. ~ Kathleen C. Thin Red Line Soundtrack Songs Thin Red Line Soundtrack Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Extremely good dramatic music. Well, I have listened to many music and just a few are barely the same quality of the one found in the Thin Red Line.
There are many tracks, and most of them are unspoken, one of the good points!!
The music is kinda depressive but outstandingly great. I've never heard before such good themes as "Light" or "Journey to the Line". Both are excellent pieces. In "Light", we visualize Witt's death(performed by Jim Caviezel, the main character)and how he reached internal peace, such a very sad scene. It also contains one of the bests melodies of the film, just at the end of the song. "Light" is my favorite theme of the soundtrack, and probably, my best theme ever, nothing had been superior to it. It is sad, and sad, and sad, but great. Give it a try.
"Journey to the Line" is also an awesome theme. Here we see how the privates from the picture go to a japanese field to hold positions until the rest of the U.S. army advances. It fits perfectly, the theme with the film in this particular scene. It is a long song lasting 9:00 minutes aprox. And just awesome.
Basically, the soundtrack is depressive as it is made from a war movie. Also, the director, Terrence Mallick, wanted to make it that way(Hanz Zimmer was the master beyond this epic work.) If you liked the movie, try the soundtrack and viceverse. The movie is also my favorite nowadays. Perhaps a bit long, but it is a master piece. No such ...p like LOTR, Harry potter, or those ...tty things out there...
I just can't understand WHY stupidity and simplicity is better sold than good things. This is just a perfect example, as I had seen none of my friends like the TTRL soundtrack but to like those "popular" pop girls: aguilera, britney spears, las ketchup and their asereje ...t. Jesus, and we call this a modern age? Anyways, that's my opionion. If you like war movies, depressive films, or just excellent music get this soundtrack.

Zimmer's masterwork This soundtrack .. like the film creeps up on you and makes a home in your subconcious.
As others have said .. "Journey to the Line" is a remarkable piece of music.
As the climax of the battle to take the hill .. it's a powerful musical statement .. yet so understated at the same time....it complements the tears the film drama produces .. doesn't provoke or manipulate them.
It's a cleansing work ... haunting .. don't know about you but I find it hard to shake a lot of Witt's poetic musings on war ... and the Colonel's righteous bluster ... "I've eaten untold buckets of s..t to get here" .. This soundtrack recaptures moments from one of the saddest .. most beautiful and yet gloriously flawed films of the past 20 years or so.
Hans Zimmer .. thankyou for such a life enriching soundtrack.. Submitted by Andrew GX (Perth Western Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A masterpiece... Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for Terrence Malick's brilliant "The Thin Red Line" is, put simply, a masterpiece. The third track, "Journey to the Line", is one of the most haunting I've heard in my entire life - it sends shivers down your spine as you start to feel human history and existence defined by music. The soundtrack, like the movie, is not only about war but about mankind. A definite must for any film buff and/or music lover. Submitted by a reviewer (Lisbon, , Portugal) Was This Review Helpful?
