Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD  (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered

Heifetz: Double Concertos
CD $6.25  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz. Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions. Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' famous bass line herald the revolution that is "So What": Davis and Evans' taut, coiled lyricism stands in sharp relief to the saxophonists' labyrinthine elation. The fat, shimmering beat of the classic Evans/Chambers/Cobb rhythm team is an oasis of calm throughout the childish blues "Freddie Freeloader." Often credited to Davis, "Blue In Green" is an Evans masterpiece, in which the rhythmic oasis becomes a smoky mirage for Davis' minor reveries on muted horn. The waltzing "All Blues" is one of the smoothest, most swinging grooves in the history of jazz, while "Flamenco Sketches" reflects Miles fascination with the earthy melodies and brooding metaphors of the Iberian peninsula...a harbinger of his next masterpiece, SKETCHES OF SPAIN. KIND OF BLUE remains M

Originally released on Atlantic (602). Includes liner notes by Alec Wilder and Gary Kramer. Good two-record anthology that features outstanding cabaret vocalist Mabel Mercer. Her approach was brillant, but not for everyone; it was stiff by jazz phrasing standards, and put far more emphasis on technique than feeling. Yet, few have been better at doing highly stylized material. ~ Ron Wynn Personnel: Mabel Mercer (vocals). Liner Note Author: Mary Ellen Mason.

This two-fer from Collectables features a pair of out of print Patti Page LPs: Say Wonderful Things and Love After Midnight, issued in 1963 and 1964, respectively, and originally released on Columbia. These albums zero in on easy listening versions of standards from the songbooks of Sammy Cahn, Jimmy Van Heusen, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mercer, Edward Heyman and Victor Young. Not an essential purchase for casual listeners, but fans who have been waiting for these LPs to make the switch to CD will appreciate it. ~ Al Campbell Full Title - Say Wonderful Things / Love After Midnight. Patti Page was 'The Singing Rage.' Her rich, husky voice made her one of the most popular vocalists of the '50s and '60s and she is still a favorite today. She won her first Grammy Award in early 2000! Page's smooth vocal delivery has launched thirteen Gold records on the Billboard charts. 'September Song', 'Days Of Wine And Roses' and 'Our Day Will Come' are some of the stand-out renditions on these original 1960's recordings. 24 tracks. Collectables. 2003. 2 LPs on 1 CD: SAY WONDERFUL THINGS (1963)/LOVE AFTER MIDNIGHT (1962). Recording information: 04/04/1963-11/20/1963. Arrangers: Dick Hyman; Dudley Brooks; Frankie Brown; Robert Mersey; James Van Heusen; Vic Schoen; Sammy Cahn; Richard Rodgers.

Sympathetic Sounds Of Detroit
Sympathetic Sounds Of Detroit CD  (2001)

Heifetz: Double Concertos

Though released in 2001, the unique Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit compilation could've been recorded in the mid-'60s to early '70s; it's pure early rock/R&B from the heart of Detroit. Produced and laid to eight-track by none other than Jack White of the White Stripes, all 13 bands used the same microphones and amps in the same room to create this slice of retro-underground rock. Some of these groups have independent full-length releases, such as the Hentchmen, whose song "Accusatory" is an organ-stomping, frat rock romp. The White Stripes themselves contribute a great up-tempo song entitled "Red Death at 6:14," with their urgent modern take on the blues. There are plenty of highlights, including Ko the Knockouts' "Black & Blue," reminiscent of a revenge-oriented Leslie Gore tune, and Bantam Rooster's punchy crunch on "Run Rabbit Run." The Soledad Brothers offer up a Chicago-style, harmonica-laced blues number called "Shaky Puddin'," and Mick Collins, formerly of the Gories and later of the Dirtbombs, helps out on the insightful "I'm Through With White Girls." Other standouts are the Paybacks' opening track, as well as the piano boogie of "Shout Bama Lama" by the Detroit Cobras. There are a few inconsistencies in the quality of the bands, but loads of character and some great songs make this is a sonically cohesive and enjoyable take on the Detroit scene. ~ Ian Trumbull Contains 20 tracks. Paybacks,Dirtbombs,Hetchmen, Ko & The Knockouts,Come On Performers include: The Detroit Cobras, The Come Ons, The White Stripes, The Dirt Bombs, KO & The Knockouts, The Von Bondies, Bamtam Rooster. Personnel: T. Jackson Potter (vocals, guitar, background vocals); Wendy Case, Jason Stollsteimer (vocals, guitar); John Hentch (vocals, Farfisa); Deanne Iovan (vocals); Jimmy Johnson , Marco Delicato (guitar, background vocals); Marcie Bolen, Jason Eberspeaker, Maribel Restrepo (guitar); Scott Craig (organ); Fast Eddie Hoh (drums, tambourine); Ben Smith , Meg White (drums, background vocals); Ben Blackwell, Jeff D.
