Entirely instrumental, Echoes of Brazil finds Badi Assad making the acoustic guitar her sole focus and paying tribute to some of Brazil's many heroes of the instrument. This splendid CD may not be the last word on Brazilian guitarists (who have played a crucial role in samba, choro, bossa nova, tropicalismo and Brazilian classical), but Assad does a fine job of reminding us what some of them contributed. It would have been impossible to tell the entire story on a single CD, and she makes no pretense of her tribute being all-inclusive. Assad, whose only accompaniment is acoustic bassist David Finck, salutes everyone from Garoto and Laurindo Almeida to Egberto Gismonti, Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfá. Much to her credit, she doesn't become a slavish imitator of any of them, and consistently demonstrates that she is a distinctive and impressive representative of the guitar herself. ~ Alex Henderson

Jazziz (8/97, p.80) - "...guitarist Badi Assad may be the best thing to happen to Brazilian music in years....ECHOES OF BRAZIL provides an overview of the Brazilian guitar tradition....the album's 14 tracks trace the history of popular Brazilian music....it's Assad's exquisite string work...that makes these echoes of Brazil so listenable."

3 stars Beautiful Brazilian Jazz
If you love Brazilian Music & love Jazz played on a nylon stringed classical guitar, then this is for you. Many of her contemporaries have already been playing Jazz on nylon stringed guitars. It sounds GREAT. She's as talented as she is beautiful. A must for your contemporary collection.

Nowadays, when a director makes a film, the priority seems to lie as much in the managing of the movie's genesis as it is in creating a perfect soundtrack. While the script, the actors and the production values can establish a film's mood and direction, a well-sculpted soundtrack can seal that feeling, adding the final piece to a successful puzzle. When successful, soundtracks can even add an extra dimension to the finished project. The ...

Matt Gonzalez and Dave Cummings have been playing around the Santa Fe area for just over a year. Most Fridays you can find them at the Catamount on Water Street.Matt and Dave met in 1988 when they were both busboys at a restaurant in their hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They both took up the guitar in 1992 as a hobby. They were both also big fans of many local bands in the Pittsburgh area. They spent many evenings watching The Clarks, Rusted Root, or Brownie Mary then running home and trying to play their songs...as well as The Beatles, Rolling Stones and The Dave Matthews Band. These bands would obviously play a role in their own songwriting in the future. It wasn't long before Matt&Dave were playing open mics around the Pittsburgh area and scoring gigs of their own. This was all before either of them knew if they were serious about all this music business. Both were at a crossroads of sorts with a lot of things in their lives. For no other reason than a bit of adventure Dave moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in May of 1997. Within two months, Matt moved to San Francisco, California. The two definitely kept in close touch; trading tapes of songs they'd written, letters, and phone calls. Matt enrolled in San Francisco State University where he studied sound recording and engineering, while Dave played open mics in the Santa Fe area. There he performed solo many of the songs the two of them were in the process of writing. After ...

Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology. Originally released on Riverside (1129). Includes liner notes by Orrin Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) Bill Evans's second date as a leader was a breakthrough session, firmly establishing him as a highly influential new voice in jazz near the tail end of 1958. His first solo record, 1956's NEW JAZZ CONCEPTIONS, while a respectable effort, was a relatively pallid affair, and left Evans feeling dissatisfied with his playing and "conception" both. Despite Riverside label owner/producer Orrin Keepnews' persistent entreaties, Evans would not return to the studio until he was ready. "Minority," the Gigi Gryce hard bop original which opens EVERYBODY DIGS.., demonstrates that he was indeed ready, and then some. Anyone who thinks of Evans as a neo-impressionist will be startled by the pianist's hard driving swing here, propelled by the ace Miles Davis rhythm section of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Evan's famously golden tone, both hard and highly malleable, glows on the breathlessly slow "Young And Foolish," with its astonishly beautiful coda, and the two solo forays taken from Bernstein's On the Town --"Lucky To Be Me" and the celebrated improvisation "Peace Piece," based on the Satie-like opening chords ...
