| | Hole Celebrity Skin CD (1998)
Funeral Oration
$12.15 Principally recorded at Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California.
CELEBRITY SKIN was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
"Celebrity Skin" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or A Group With Vocal and Best Rock Song. "Malibu" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
After getting more press than O.J. Simpson, Courtney Love and Hole went underground to put together this quality, guitar-driven rock/pop release. CELEBRITY SKIN is packed from beginning to end with up-tempo, hard rock gems that show Love's strength and direction as a songwriter. Co-writing several tracks on CELEBRITY SKIN is Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan ("Malibu", "Petals").
The title track is co-penned by Corgan with Love scripting the lyrics. Kicking into overdrive from the first chord, the song talks about the often-comical pursuit of fortune and fame. The lyrics on "Hit So Hard" make you wonder whether Love is talking about domestic abuse or the drop-dead feeling that results from spotting the most beautiful boy in the world across the room? The lyrics are smart ...
| | Uncle Tupelo 89/93: An Anthology CD (2002)
Funeral Oration
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York.
For those whose memory may not extend beyond the last Ryan Adams record, alt-country as we know it today pretty much started with Uncle Tupelo. In the 21st century they may best known for giving birth to Wilco and Son Volt, but in those halcyon days whose span is indicated by this anthology's title, Uncle Tupelo were premier roots-rockers combining country influences with the indie-rock sounds of the day (Husker Du, the Replacements, you know the drill). The key here is that we're talking alt-country, not country rock. In other words, the punk influence manifest in this 21-song collection was what helped Tupelo (and all their subsequent disciples) set themselves apart from the laid-back country-rock sounds of the '70s, even if Gram Parsons was as big an inspiration to UT as the Minutemen. Uncle Tupelo weren't around long enough to amass much of a discography, so this generous collection is an excellent and definitive place to start learning about them, and by extension, about the roots of modern-day alternative country (-rock).

| | Johnossi CD (2006)
Funeral Oration
$11.65 Johnossi are singer/guitarist John Engelbert and drummer Oskar "Ossi" Bonde, and for a duo, this Swedish pair packs quite a punch. You wouldn't think so from the folky, acoustic intro to "The Show Tonight," which opens their eponymous debut album, not, at least, until Engelbert's electric guitar storms in and kicks the song toward hard rock. But Johnossi delight in bashing around genres, from the bluesy ballad "The Lottery," which slams into Southern rock and boasts a "Free Bird"-styled soaring guitar solo, to the porch picking blues of "Man Must Dance," which slides surprisingly into sharply angular post-punk. "Dance" is irrepressible and "Execution Song" equally so, an insatiable slab of '60s garage. "Rescue Team" positively swaggers around British Invasion territory with a fabulously infectious singalong chorus, mod for the modern age, Engelbert's Little Richard's "oohs" adding to the fun. Less catchy but more intense is "Press Hold," a superb mix of late-'60s-styled ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Brighter Than Creation's Dark CD (2008) Digipak
Funeral Oration
$14.39 After relentless touring and recording since 2001; and the unexpected departure of original member Jason Isbell in 2006, the Drive-By Truckers were supposed to take a breather and take stock, but instead regrouped (with long-time touring guitarist John Neff promoted to full-fledged member), and quickly delivered their best record. With 19 songs clocking in at 75 minutes, BRIGHTER THAN CREATION'S DARK is a modern roots-rock masterpiece. The band's three ace songwriters--guitarist Paterson Hood, guitarist Mike Cooley, and bassist Shonna Tucker--all contribute affecting takes on love, loss, addiction, violence, regret, and want in a gripping Southern gothic morality play.
Musically, the band is on fire with an expansive sonic palette ...
| | Sarafina! The Sound Of Freedom CD (1992) Original Soundtrack
Funeral Oration
$10.39 Sarafina is a story of apartheid in South Africa, which is a risky subject for a musical of inspiring dance numbers. Adapted for the screen from the Broadway play, Sarafina combines traditional African sensibilities with a theatrical sound and gripping lyrics. "Freedom Is Coming Tomorrow" may be the centerpiece, but it is only a sample in this bold collection. Writer/producer Mbongeni Ngema, under the authority of Quincy Jones, establishes a musical whose agenda is not only to provide powerful African rhythms and chants, but to make them palatable to an audience who may otherwise disregard it as "foreign." Sarafina makes true use of the term "African-American" because it is at once rooted in ancestry and expansively ...
| | Big Jack Johnson Oil Man CD (1987)
Funeral Oration
$12.25 Throughout the '60s and '70s, guitarist/vocalist Johnson performed with Frank Frost and Sam Carr in the Jelly Roll Kings, a gritty, soulful blues trio. Through a circuitous route, he finally recorded this, his first solo album, over the course of two days in 1986. Frost turns up on piano, but THE OIL MAN is clearly Johnson's show. He makes his Chicago roots clear with two Howlin' Wolf covers ("Killing Floor" and "How Many More Years") and the Muddy Waters-associated "Catfish Blues," but even at this early date, the country influences that would later become more prevalent are heard (Merle Travis's "Steel Guitar Rag"). Though his is a raw, hardcore electric blues sound, Johnson isn't afraid to let his outside interests show. Walter Roy's bass playing, which would define the subsequent sound of Johnson's rhythm section even when Roy wasn't in it, owes more to the punchy tone of Jack Bruce than to Willie Dixon. Throughout THE OIL MAN, Johnson's cutting, uncomplicated guitar work and emotive vocals maintain an impressive viscerality.
"Johnson's fat, reverb-drenched guitar tone and convincing vocals make for a potent combination on such classics as Catfish and How Many More Years, and even help to compensate ...
