"These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," with its sinister descending bass run, had made Nancy Sinatra an instant icon of cool, and the leather outfit she wore on the sleeve of the concurrent album cemented her image as a leather booted, mini-skirted cookie. Along with her signature tune, heard here in both stereo album and mono single mixes, she essays several songs by her producer/Svengali Lee Hazlewood, as well as a bunch of then-current hits, as was common practice at the time.
Highlights include a bossa nova version of Marianne Faithfull's "As Tears Go By" (with unsettlingly sophisticated jazz chording), a take on the Knickerbockers' "Lies" that nixes the song's Beatles sound-alike quality in favor of bizarre helium-voiced chorus vocals, and a horn-driven big band runthrough of the Fab Four's "Day Tripper." BOOTS is a quintessential '60s time capsule.
1995 reissue on Sundazed of her 1966 debut for Reprise with four single sides as bonus tracks: the B-sides 'The City Never Sleeps At Night' & 'Leave My Dog Alone', the A-side 'In Our Time' and 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin'' (Mono Single Version). 'Boots', which reached #5 in the U.S., alsofeatures the #1 smash 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin'' & the chart hit 'So Long, Babe'. Also featured here is the original cover art. 15 tracks total. NANCY SINATRA and her "Boots" album, one of the best LP in the history of Rock & Roll. Nancy is the real 60's godess. The album open with "As tears go by", tender version by Nancy, includes the covers "Daytripper", "Run for your life" and others like "Lies". She's is strong with her own hit "These boots are made for walkin'". LP or CD, real jewel.

This album is the last of four (!) Nancy Sinatra released in 1966, a time when pop stars apparently had a more serious work ethic. It's something of a return to the formula of her earlier albums, after a brief detour into old-timey pre-rock standards on SUGAR.
Here, more sensibly, Sinatra purrs her sex-kittenish way through a series of songs by her producer/Svengali Lee Hazlewood, and covers various pop hits of the day, including the Drifters' "On Broadway," and Dusty Springfield's "Wishin' and Hopin'." She also essays the theme songs to two quintessentially '60s flicks, including the James Bond epic "You Only Live Twice," in which she's backed by members of the London Philharmonic. And speaking of things quintessentially '60s, don't miss the bonus track, a duet with father Frank, appropriately entitled "Life's a Trippy Thing."

This album--one of four (!) Sinatra released in 1966, a time when pop stars apparently had a more serious work ethic--was something of a departure for the chanteuse. Unlike her previous efforts, which were a mix of songs by producer/Svengali Lee Hazlewood and covers of pop hits of the day, this one featured only three Hazlewood compositions, including the LSD anthem "Sugartown," along with lots of old-timey pre-rock standards. These include a couple--"All By Myself" and "What'll I Do," by Irving Berlin.
Sinatra seems every bit the sex kitten as usual in this repertoire (don't even think about the back cover, which features her posed in pink bikini and go-go boots). As a bonus, this remastered CD includes her duet with father Frank, "Something Stupid," also a 1966 hit.
This Sundazed reissue of Nancy's 1967 release includes bonus tracks 'Love Eyes' and 'Something Stupid'. 1995.

This is the soundtrack to Nancy Sinatra's Emmy-winning 1967 TV special, which she conceived as an ahead-of-its-time collection of what today would be called music videos. Each song was shot in a different location, including a monastery and an abandoned amusement park. (The curious should definitely check out the video version, which features mind-bogglingly trippy effects and groovy '60s fashions from the soft underbelly of the Summer Of Love).
The songs include several of her hits, with "These Boots Are Made for Walking" being the obvious exception. As you'd expect she covers several hits of the day such as the Fifth Dimension's "Up, Up and Away," as well as songs by her longtime producer/Svengali Lee Hazlewood, who duets with her on "Some Velvet Morning." Frank Sinatra also shows up (billed as "A Very Close Relative") for a nice reading of "Younger Than Springtime."

There are sentimental ballads performed with solo guitar ("My Dad, My Pa"), country songs ("Here We Go Again"), pre-rock pop standards ("Old Devil Moon"), a cover of Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man," a minimalist version of a blues classic ("Big Boss Man," slowed to an absolutely glacial tempo), and even a big orchestral assault on the Doors "Light My Fire." This remastered version also thoughtfully appends "Happy," a single that marked Sinatra's last collaboration with Hazlewood, as a bonus track.

On the strength of the gently rolling mid-tempo ballad "Close the Door," Teddy Pendergrass's 1978 sophomore effort gained serious recognition at the time of its release, and announced that Pendergrass was well on his way to becoming a major figure on the R&B scene. Philadelphia International had their slick grooves and top-notch production treatments down by the late '70s, and, as a result, LIFE IS A SONG WORTH SINGING is non-stop aural pleasure.
Though he is known primarily as a balladeer, Pendergrass could also get loose and funky, and one of the appealing things about LIFE IS A SONG is its shifts in mood and tempo. Both "Only You" and "Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose" are jams worthy of the dance floor. On both uptempo tracks and slow jams, though, the man's voice--smooth, rough, intimate, and intense all at once--is never less than thrilling. This was Pendergrass's first true solo gem.
