| | Bruce Johnston Surfin' 'Round The World CD Bruce Johnston Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This 1997 CD reissue of SURFIN' ROUND THE WORLD includes alternate versions of three songs from the original LP.
Originally released on Columbia (LP CS 8857) in 1963. Includes original liner notes and an interview with Bruce Johnston by Al Quaglieri.
Bruce Johnston was a member of the early 1960s pop/rock/surf duo Bruce and Terry (Terry being Doris Day's son Terry Melcher) and an on-and-off member of the Beach Boys. But back in 1963, he decided to strike while the iron was hot and recorded this strange surf-inspired "cash-in" album. (His timing was good--a year or so later, the first British Invasion would, sadly, bury surf music.) SURFIN' is mostly instrumental, featuring some cool surf-y guitar, drenched in reverb, and, unusual for the genre, interesting horn and keyboard parts.
The tracks with vocals are truly hilarious. The song "Hot Pastrami, Mashed Potatoes, Come On To Rincon--Yeah!!!" (it's not only the title; it's virtually all the lyrics, too!) features call-and-response vocals that make The Carpenters sound like Ray Charles and The Raylettes. The lyrics generally concern surfing and the search for the Perfect Wave, and they sound like they were written in 20 minutes. With this album, hard-core surf-music collectors will think they've died and gone to Wakiki.
U.S. CD debut for 1963 Columbia album in its entirety, plus three rare bonus tracks - 'Down Under' (Unissued Instrumental), 'The Hamptons' (Unissued Instrumental) & 'Surfin' 'Round The World' (Unissued Alternate Version). 15 tracks total. Johnston eventually joined The Beach Boys. 1997 Sundazed release.

Surfin' 'Round The World CD music
$14.29 This 20-track compilation gathers together the best of Johnston's and Melcher's best sides for Columbia under the B&T moniker. That's important, because this collection could just as easily have been double the length if they had amassed all the tracks that Bruce & Terry had recorded under other names like the Rip Chords, etc. including the hit "Hey Little Cobra." Because Bruce & Terry were a virtual vocal overdubbing machine, some of the tracks on here ("Custom Machine," "Don't Run Away," "I Love You Model T," "Come Love," "Raining In My Heart") appear in mono-only formats. This ...

$16.15 Imagine the Mamas & the Papas without the arranging prowess of John Phillips or the powerful voice of Cass Elliot and you get a pretty good idea of what the Deep Six sounded like. During their brief existence, they released one self-titled LP in 1966 on Liberty. Over ...
| | Association Live CD (1970)
Surfin' 'Round The World album
$13.59 This 75-minute album, originally a double-LP (recorded live at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on April 3, 1970) is a valiant attempt at capturing the Association's concert sound on record. Unfortunately, it fails for several reasons, beginning with the fact that the instrumental mix is very bass-heavy -- even with adjustments to compensate, this overwhelms much of the rest of the band on several key numbers. Additionally, the group's singing, though more than adequate, lacks the presence needed to give their harmonies the necessary radiance to make the music fully attractive, coming off instead as anemic. The real problem is that cutting a live album was a thankless task for this group ...

| | Sheriff CD (1988)
Surfin' 'Round The World album
$10.49 1988 rerelease of the Toronto, Canada group Sheriff's lone disc with Freddi Currci on vocals; he went on to form Alias. Features the chart topper 'When I'm With You', plus 'Crazy Without You', 'California' & seven more.
If you're looking for bleak lyrics vainly trying to capture human emotion, then Sheriff is not for you. Sheriff is one of those albums that you put in your car on a sunny day for the ride to the beach. The album is light pop and the lyrics never aspire to be more than just plain old fun. The appeal of Sheriff is simple, upbeat, catchy pop melodies. Add the remarkable voice of Fred Curci and you have a winning formula. Curci is one of those rare vocalists who can make you sing along with every track. The pulsating "California" is representative of the band's high-energy approach. Set to a throbbing beat, songwriter and guitarist Arnold Lanni sketches out flashy guitar riffs, while Curci's elastic voice soars through the arrangement. Other tracks that deserve mention are the spirited "Makin' My Way," and "Crazy Without You," which ...
