One of the most popular yet most underrated rock bands of the '60s was Paul Revere & The Raiders. They were teen idols and sold millions of records, but because they wore Revolutionary War soldiers' uniforms and were teen idols with no "artistic" aspirations (or pretensions), they were written off as a product of their time. That they were, but they were also a great rock & roll band who made some blistering, garage rock-charged noise that stands the test of time.
Nearly everyone knows "Kicks" (one of the first anti-drug pop songs), but too few have heard their snarling, rippling take on "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" (later a hit for the Monkees and covered by the Sex Pistols). On this, singer Mark Lindsay's voice drips with barely controlled, snotty disdain. "Louie Go Home," a sort-of-follow-up to the standard "Louie, Louie," shifts from a dense, building rocker to a driving swirl of a raga-tinged guitar rave-up. Sure, there's a bit of silliness, such as "Melody for an Unknown Girl" (which was probably done as goof), but while they weren't innovators, these fellows can show you a good time.
Reissue of 1966 album with 4 bonus tracks 'Shake It Up', 'Little Girl In The 4th Row' (Italian language version), 'SS 396' and 'Corvair Baby'. Also includes archival flyers and rare photos. 2000 release. Standard jewelcase.
Includes liner notes by Drake Levin and Phil "Fang" Volk.Q (4/00, pp.113,115) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Best of [their] career mainly because it's got 'Kicks' on it and The Byrds' producer, Terry Melcher, knew how to put some rattle into the guitar..." Midnight Ride Review

Midnight Ride music CDs
$11.59 The rest of the album leans mostly towards sturdy rave-ups of recent singles like Marvin Gaye's "I'll Be Doggone," Them's "Baby Please Don't Go," "Satisfaction." There's a surprising pair of choices in Jimmy Forrest's jazz instrumental classic "Night Train" and Donovan's folk-rocky "Catch the Wind." That both sound perfectly reasonable and equally exciting is testament to the Raiders' bar-band vitality.
This is Paul Revere & the Raiders the way garage band fanatics want to remember them. The Sundazed version of this album is twice the record that the original LP was, with louder, sharper, denser sound that captures the punk edge that this band had on its best days, which were frequent during this part of their history. Released in May of 1965, Just Like Us was the group's first full studio album for Columbia, ...
| | Revere, Paul & The Raiders Goin' To Memphis CD (2000) Remastered; Reissued
Midnight Ride songs
$11.95 Regardless of the name on the album, Goin' to Memphis is essentially a Mark Lindsay solo project cut in Memphis, at Chips Moman's American Studios. At the time, the group was looking for a change in sound, their prior LP, Revolution, having failed to sell in remotely the number of its predecessors; road manager Jerry Williams suggested an album with Moman, who would only record with his own house musicians: Tommy Cogbill and Reggie Young on guitars, Mike Leech on bass, Spooner Oldham and Bobby Woods on keyboards, and Gene Crispian on drums. So this is Mark Lindsay and and those guys, with Lindsay writing six of the songs himself. Only one cut -- the previously recorded single "Peace ...
| | Revere, Paul & The Raiders Alias Pink Puzz CD (1969)
Midnight Ride album
$11.95 The title was a reference to the band's ruse of submitting a new record to an L.A. radio station under the alias and earning airplay until it was discovered that "Pink Puzz" was really Paul Revere & the Raiders. That was the Raiders' dilemma -- they could still get attention for their singles, such as the Top 40 rocker "Let Me!" that led off this collection, but hip FM radio didn't want to know. Actually, since Mark Lindsay's muse was taking him in a pop-swamp rock direction not far removed from what Elvis Presley ...
