Initially created to be the house band for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehonr's Sansu Enterprises, the Meters started out backing such famous names as Lee Dorsey and Betty Harris. Led by organist Art Neville, the quartet was rounded out by jazz-influenced guitarist Leo Nocentelli along with the bubbling rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. Booker T. & The MGs may have been the most obvious influence, but the Meters differentiated themselves by injecting a healthy dose of New Orleans funk into their sound.
Led by Neville's fat-sounding organ, the Meters quickly scored hits with the sinewy "Cissy Strut" and the more languid "Sophisticated Cissy." Simplicity is the hallmark of this impressive debut and nuance is paramount, whether it's Nocentelli's lazy riffs echoing throughout "Ease Back" or Modeliste unobtrusively riding his hi-hat along the perimeter of the Memphis-fried "6V6 La." Not unlike the MGs, the Meters were masters of interpretation. The band here moves easily from a chugging reading of Sly Stone's "Sing a Simple Song," to kicking back on a smoky version of the Classics IV's "Stormy," to gently delivering the previously unreleased nugget "The Look of Love."
Reissue of the 1969 debut by this funky New Orleans-based r&b group led by Art Neville & produced by the mighty team of Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn. Contains all 12 cuts from when the Josie label originally issued the record, plus two previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'The Look Of Love' & 'Soul Machine'. 14 tracks total. 1999 release.
Producers: Allen Toussaint, Marshall Sehorn.
Personnel: Leo Nocentelli (vocals, guitar); Art Neville (organ, keyboards); Ziggy Modeliste (drums).

Meters CD music
$6.55 Though Gino Vannelli's third record didn't contain a big hit single like its predecessor, STORM AT SUNUP was a significant step forward artistically. Combining the Stevie Wonder-esque synth textures of POWERFUL PEOPLE with a complex jazz-rock fusion sound and vocal gymnastics occasionally reminiscent of Tim Buckley, the album finds Vannelli at his most musically ambitious. "Mama Coco" sounds like Weather Report jamming with Jamiroquai singer Jason Kay, while "Love is a Night" makes ELP-style keyboard rock sound like pure love-makin' music.

Meters music CDs
$11.69 Although the Meters had scored a pair of hits on the band's self-titled debut ("Cissy Strut," "Sophisticated Cissy"), the instrumental quartet was still busy churning out sessions at the New Orleans studio of Allen Tousaint and Marshall Sehorn. Between backing such names as Lee Dorsey and Betty Harris, the band cranked out a follow-up that was even funkier than its debut.
When these songs aren't busy getting basted by Art Neville's succulent-sounding organ ("Pungee") or spiced up by guitarist Leo Nocentelli's licks ("9 'Til 5"), the rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Ziggy Modeliste keeps the stew cooking with plenty of bouncy grooves ("Funky Miracle.") The best example of the Meters' ability to reside squarely in the pocket is the infectious title track, which is inspired by a misfiring auto engine and dominated by Modeliste's whip-smart time keeping. Other notable juicy moments include the percolating "Little Old Money Maker" and the previously unreleased soul nugget "Borro." By far the oddest track on LOOK-KA PY PY is a cover of "Oh, Calcutta!" that sounds more suited for a Memphis after-hours club than the Broadway stage.

| | Meters Struttin' CD (1970)
Meters songs
$11.65 When the Meters went into Cosimo Matassa's New Orleans studio in 1970 to cut STRUTTIN, the band already had two albums under its belt and a lifetime of experience, thanks to thousands of hours of session work done for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehorn.
On the band's third album, the Meters continued recording instrumentals, but vocals start to creep into the mix for the first time. Organ player Art Neville was chosen to sing (by virtue of the fact that he'd already sang some sides as a solo performer as far back as 1955). Among the selections he croons are a cover of "Wichita Lineman," Lee Dorsey's 1963 smash "Ride Your Pony," and a sweet reading of soul singer Ty Hunter's "Darling, Darling, Darling." The only original sung by Neville is the previously unreleased Otis Redding-inspired "Funky Meters' Soul." Needless to say, the remaining members (guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Ziggy Modeliste) keep everything cooking, whether Nevillew is belting vocals out or not. Among the highlights are the chugging novelty song "Chicken Strut" (complete with Modeliste's cackling), the booty-shaking call and response of "Same Old Thing," and the crackling "Tippi-Toes."

Contains all 12 cuts from when the Josie label originally issued it, plus two previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'Funky Meters' Soul' & 'Meter Strut'. The album was their second record overall & their final one for the label. 1999 release.

| | Meters Rejuvenation CD (1974)
Meters album
$11.69 REJUVENATION stands as both The Meters' shining moment and a quintessential funk album. Anchored by the rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste, this New Orleans institution also benefited from guitarist/resident jazzbo Leo Nocentelli's chicken-scratch picking and keyboardist Art Neville's soulful vocals. The Meters' time as producer Allen Toussaint's house band had an effect on REJUVENATION. Playing on Robert Palmer's SNEAKIN' SALLY THROUGH THE ALLEY led to a meeting with Little Feat's Lowell George, who took the band up on an invitation to appear uncredited on the rubbery funk of "Just Kissed My Baby." A session with Dr. John found The Meters nicking the drumbeat from his "Shoo Fly Marches On" and turning it into the Big Easy anthem "Hey Pocky A-Way." Elsewhere, female background vocalists give a sanctified aura to the gospel-flavored ballad "Love Is For Me" and a Sly Stone tint to the Santana-flavored epic "It Ain't No Use." For funk ...

| | Cledus T Judd Did I Shave My Back For This? CD (1998)
Meters songs
$14.35 Cledus T. Judd stakes his claim as Country Music's prime court jester with "Did I Shave My Back For This?," an album which mixes the Country parodies that made him famous with a few original tunes. Cledus's rollicking, self-deprecating humor is at its highest (or perhaps lowest) on the title track, which finds him enumerating the finer points of a beauty routine which is as funny as it is sickening. "Cledus Don't Stop Eatin' For Nothin'" details Mr. Judd's prodigious consumption to the tune of Brooks & Dunn's "Mama Don't Get Dressed Up For Nothin'."
Judd takes a swipe at Mindy McCready on "Wives Do It All The Time," but not to worry, Ol' Cledus pours out his heart to the songstress on "Mindy McReady," a hilarious reworking of Alan Jackson's smash hit "Little Bitty." Cledus also proves that he doesn't need someone else's tunes to make you laugh. Buck Owens lends his inimitable vocal style to "First Redneck On The Internet," in which Cledus joins the computer age to wreak havoc on the woman who did him wrong. "Psychic To The Stars" finds Cledus supplementing his income by making predictions for Country music's heavy hitters.

| | Motown Chartbusters, Vol. 1 CD (1970) Import
Meters album
$9.79 Motown Chartbusters, Vol. 1 was the first in a series of 12 released by Motown's U.K. subsidary, Tamla-Motown. Like many in the series, the album mixes bona fide hits like "Jimmy Mack," "Standing in the Shadows of Love," and "The Happening" with more obscure gems like "7-Rooms of Gloom" and "Gonna Give Her All the Love I've Got." Motown's popularity waned slightly with the British Invasion (even though many British acts were covering the label's originals). This compilation was released as the second wave of Motown acts such as the Four Tops and the Temptations were beginning to gain momentum. All selections here were Top 30 U.K. hits. Most will be familiar to both Motown aficionados and the casual music fan ("It Takes Two," "How Sweet It Is," "I Was Made to Love Her"). Although not a comprehensive collection, it does offer the chance to pick up 16 classic tracks on one album -- something not many other mid-'60s Motown albums can boast. ~ Rob Flanagan

| | Alana Sanders I'm Thankful CD (2007)
Meters music CDs
$9.59 "In front are the singers, after them the musicians; with them are the maidens playing tambourines." - Psalms 68:25A native of Covington Louisiana, a metro city outside of New Orleans, Alana Sanders is the daughter of the Late, Rev. Leon & Shirley Sanders, former school teachers in the St. Tammany Parish School Board System. Alana began singing at the age of three (3) and was a member of the African Methodist Episcopal church where her father was a minister. Because her father was a music teacher she inherited his gift to where she was taught piano and voice under his direction and later received instructions under some notable teachers. While in grammar school she received much honors for her vocal performance that she was asked to perform at many events, participated in competitions where she has won over 25 beauty and scholarship pageants and always winning the talent portion of the competition. Alana received the honor of being selected for the District IX Honor Chorus and was the soloist her first year. During her last year of high school she received numerous scholarship opportunities from various universities and selected the World Renowned Grambling State University Choir singing under the direction of Dr. Cheryl D. Clancy. Once Alana finished her undergraduate degree she the moved to Atlanta, GA and while working within her career she sung background for a few artist and began writing and arranging music. She entered a few talent competitions in the area and won but she was not satisfied with singing secular music when she was raised in a house loving the Lord. Alana then started recording her music, where she has worked with the talent producer Karl Antoine, whom has produced many celebrities' albums; this was his first contemporary gospel project. Mr. Antoine worked wonders on her debut Album, "I'm Thankful", that her song "I'm Thinking" is a highly requested demo. "Thinking" talks about how she was reared by Godly feared parents instilling in her the instructions from God. Even though she received the teachings about the heavenly father, she made choices that were not of Him and had to learn from her mistakes and disobedience to the Father.Alana has been working diligently serving the Master(God), making sure that her ministry is heard and that people are touched by the words of the Lord. Alana is not afraid to reveal her trials and tribulations within her songs to where her testimony can help save lives while bringing her listeners closer to God.Alana's soulful voice has be compared to the likes of Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples and many others that have paved the way for Gospel and R&B artist. She has also graced the same stages with many greats in the industry and has held down many audiences, bringing them closer to God.Alana currently ...
