(1 Customer Review)
When the Meters went into Cosimo Matassa's New Orleans studio in 1970 to cut STRUTTIN, the band already had two albums under its belt and a lifetime of experience, thanks to thousands of hours of session work done for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehorn.
On the band's third album, the Meters continued recording instrumentals, but vocals start to creep into the mix for the first time. Organ player Art Neville was chosen to sing (by virtue of the fact that he'd already sang some sides as a solo performer as far back as 1955). Among the selections he croons are a cover of "Wichita Lineman," Lee Dorsey's 1963 smash "Ride Your Pony," and a sweet reading of soul singer Ty Hunter's "Darling, Darling, Darling." The only original sung by Neville is the previously unreleased Otis Redding-inspired "Funky Meters' Soul." Needless to say, the remaining members (guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Ziggy Modeliste) keep everything cooking, whether Nevillew is belting vocals out or not. Among the highlights are the chugging novelty song "Chicken Strut" (complete with Modeliste's cackling), the booty-shaking call and response of "Same Old Thing," and the crackling "Tippi-Toes."
Reissue of 1970 album by this funky New Orleans-based r& b group led by Art Neville & produced by the mighty team of Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn. Contains all 12 cuts from when the Josie label originally issued it, plus two previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'Funky Meters' Soul' & 'Meter Strut'. The album was their second record overall & their final one for the label. 1999 release.

Q (2/00, p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...hard-to-find, MGs-inspired instrumental albums....magical skeletons of jigsaw funk...[a] must-have..." Dirty Linen (6-7/00, pp.87-8) - "...Displays all of the swagger and funk of a sweltering New Orleans summer night romp....the premier instrumental band of swamp-rock and soul....Chunky African rhythms, slow-cooked shuffles, and some backbeat boss basslines..." Living Blues (5-6/01, pp.91-4) - "...Excellent....The music is exceptional, a potent mixture of clipped jerk rhythms and simple laid-back funk with syncopated accents....a virtual blueprint for '70s street funk..." $14.79 The Tokens are generally thought of as the vocal group who brought their "Lion Sleeps Tonight" hit to yet another generation through the success of The Lion King. But what we have here is the great lost Tokens album, recorded in 1968 and promptly turned down by Warner Bros. To fill a contractual obligation, a few hundred copies were pressed up -- in a slightly altered form -- and the album pretty much remained an interesting catalog sighting before its CD-era reissue. What we also have here is a White doo wop group delivering an album that falls somewhere between Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's. No wonder Warner didn't know what to make of it; previous attempts by other doo woppers at updating their sound produced some of the most laughable examples that the genre has to offer. But everything on here works in a very organic manner: all of the songs follow a neat continuum and could easily be termed as a humanistic song cycle, each one surrounded by late-'60s Beatlesque production values, right down to the massively compressed drum sounds and omnipresent tape saturation. Trippy, loopy, and totally of its time, classic doo wop this is not; great, however, it is. ~ Cub Koda
In 1961 THE TOKENS, four boys from Brooklyn, recorded "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" on the RCA label. The song (originally a Zulu folk song called "Mbube" Anglicized to "Wimoweh") soared up the charts to become the number one hit in the nation. To date it has sold 15 million copies throughout the world. ...
