While the Barbarians live up to a lot of people's vision of the classic garage-band image, their album is disappointing and thin-sounding. The material, none of which was penned by the group, is average and doesn't even rock terribly hard. "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl" is here, but much of the rest of the songs are overdone standards ("House of the Rising Sun" is especially lame). "What the New Breed Say" is an OK anthem of rebellion, and "I'll Keep on Seeing You" a modestly touching ballad. But as eight of the 12 songs are covers and four tunes are supplied to them by songwriters not in the band, the album does not reflect much in the way of an original vision. The 2000 Sundazed reissue adds three important bonus tracks: "Moulty" and, at long last, both sides of their rare 1964 single on Joy, "Hey Little Bird"/"You've Got to Understand." "Hey Little Bird," the song they performed on their T.A.M.I. Show appearance, is easily their best track, although the studio version isn't as ferocious as their rendition on film. ~ Richie Unterberger

Mojo (Publisher) (6/00, p.120) - "...'Are You A Boy' was a garage band protest anthem to end 'em all. The follow-up, 'What The New Breed Say', was almost as hip and their 1st single, 'Hey Little Bird' was a marvelously snotty slice of teen angst. All are included..." Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl? Music Barbarians Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl? Songs Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl? Music Review Average Rating: (2.3 out of 5 stars) Barbarians -'Are You A Boy Or Are You An It?' You've got to be joking with this waste of time, money and effort piece of worthless '60's psychedelic trash. Maybe two tracks on this entire disc didn't nearly put me to sleep. So, their drummer had one hand. Big deal! I have two. Avoid at all costs! Submitted by straight_man1975 (everywhere..) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 17 of 17 found this helpful.
Barbarians-'Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl?' (Sundazed) I give it 2 1/2 stars.I waited so long to get a copy of this CD,I'm sorry to say that I was a bit disappointed.Seems the band wrote none of the album's material themselves. All isn't lost here, for a few good cuts to be heard, like the title track, their cover of "Mr.Tambourine Man",their good version of "Bo-Diddley" and "Suzy Q".It's just that 'Are You A...' could've been so much better,I felt.Overall, second rate garage rock.Might appeal to some fans of The Seeds,Count Five,? &The Mysterians and The Outcasts. Barbarians Rock This album includes some weak tracks but also some excellent cuts. "Try to Understand", and "This Little Bird" originally released on Joy Records are top notch. This band was known for it's exciting stage act and put on a high energy show. A combination of small record labels and weak promotion never allowed the Barbarians to acheive the fame that they deserved. They were as good if not better than many groups of the time.
