| | Meters Fire On The Bayou CD Meters Discography of CDs
The Meters released FIRE ON THE BAYOU shortly before embarking on the Rolling Stones' 1975 tour as an opening act. Essentially a love letter to the band's New Orleans hometown, the album also heralded the arrival of fifth member Cyril Neville, younger brother of keyboardist Art. His additional vocals added a soulful edge to songs such as the brassy "Out In the Country" and the crackling "Talkin' Bout New Orleans." Other numbers honoring the Big Easy include the choppily funky title track, a peppy cover of Jody Levens' "Mardi Gras Mambo," and the rollicking "They All Ask'd for You," a novelty song based on an old New Orleans lullaby.
Elsewhere, The Meters travel down some interesting creative avenues, notably in the cool ambiance of "Middle of the Road," an instrumental honoring guitarist Leo Nocentelli's jazz heroes, and a rhythmically rich cover of Argent's "Liar." Much of FIRE ON THE BAYOU is defined by all five members randomly slipping in and out of the rhythm, resulting in laid-back funk such as "Love Slip Upon Ya" and "Can You Do Without?" Less than two years after this seminal album, the Meters broke up; the Neville Brothers emerged from their ashes.

Fire On The Bayou songs
$11.59 Initially created to be the house band for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehonr's Sansu Enterprises, the Meters started out backing such famous names as Lee Dorsey and Betty Harris. Led by organist Art Neville, the quartet was rounded out by jazz-influenced guitarist Leo Nocentelli along with the bubbling rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. Booker T. & The MGs may have been the most obvious influence, but the Meters differentiated themselves by injecting a healthy dose of New Orleans funk into their sound.
Led by Neville's fat-sounding organ, the Meters quickly scored hits with the sinewy "Cissy Strut" and the more languid "Sophisticated Cissy." Simplicity is the hallmark of this impressive debut and nuance is paramount, whether it's Nocentelli's lazy riffs echoing throughout "Ease Back" or Modeliste unobtrusively riding his hi-hat along the perimeter of the Memphis-fried "6V6 ...
| | Meters Cabbage Alley CD (1972)
Fire On The Bayou album
$11.59 Originally released on Reprise (2076). Includes liner notes by Bunny Matthews and Barry Hansen.
When the Meters moved from their bankrupted indie label Josie to Warner Brothers for 1972's CABBAGE ALLEY, they shifted from funky instrumentals to soulful vocalizing. Leading the way to this new direction was guitarist Leo Nocentelli, who wrote or co-wrote most of these songs. True to Nocentelli's New Orleans origins, a spirit of jocular abandon winds its way throughout this album.
Among the most notable examples are the chugging and infectious "Soul Island," inspired by a tour of the Caribbean, and the mid-tempo grit of a dance theme called "Do the Dirt." Elsewhere, Nocentelli's compositions include the psychedelic soul of "Stay Away," and "The Flower Song," a romantic instrumental tailor-made for a candlelit dinner. Altering this carefree atmosphere are a pair of consciousness-raising tracks: "You've Got to Change (You've Got to Reform)," and the Band-like poignancy of "Lonesome and Unwanted People," featuring keyboardist Art Neville's soulful vocals. ...
| | Meters Rejuvenation CD (1974)
Fire On The Bayou CD music
$11.69 REJUVENATION stands as both The Meters' shining moment and a quintessential funk album. Anchored by the rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste, this New Orleans institution also benefited from guitarist/resident jazzbo Leo Nocentelli's chicken-scratch picking and keyboardist Art Neville's soulful vocals. The Meters' time as producer Allen Toussaint's house band had an effect on REJUVENATION. Playing on Robert Palmer's SNEAKIN' SALLY THROUGH THE ALLEY led to a meeting with Little Feat's Lowell George, who took the band up on an invitation to appear uncredited on the rubbery funk of "Just Kissed My Baby." A session with Dr. John found The Meters ...
