REJUVENATION stands as both The Meters' shining moment and a quintessential funk album. Anchored by the rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste, this New Orleans institution also benefited from guitarist/resident jazzbo Leo Nocentelli's chicken-scratch picking and keyboardist Art Neville's soulful vocals. The Meters' time as producer Allen Toussaint's house band had an effect on REJUVENATION. Playing on Robert Palmer's SNEAKIN' SALLY THROUGH THE ALLEY led to a meeting with Little Feat's Lowell George, who took the band up on an invitation to appear uncredited on the rubbery funk of "Just Kissed My Baby." A session with Dr. John found The Meters nicking the drumbeat from his "Shoo Fly Marches On" and turning it into the Big Easy anthem "Hey Pocky A-Way." Elsewhere, female background vocalists give a sanctified aura to the gospel-flavored ballad "Love Is For Me" and a Sly Stone tint to the Santana-flavored epic "It Ain't No Use." For funk aficionados, the rumbling "Africa" (which was excellently interpreted by The Chili Peppers) remains the essence of REJUVENATION.

Rejuvenation album
$11.79 Initially created to be the house band for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehonr's Sansu Enterprises, the Meters started out backing such famous names as Lee Dorsey and Betty Harris. Led by organist Art Neville, the quartet was rounded out by jazz-influenced guitarist Leo Nocentelli along with the bubbling rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. Booker T. & The MGs may have been the most obvious influence, but the Meters differentiated themselves by injecting a healthy dose of New Orleans funk into their sound.
Led by Neville's fat-sounding organ, the Meters quickly scored hits with the sinewy "Cissy Strut" and the more languid "Sophisticated Cissy." Simplicity is the hallmark of this impressive debut and nuance is paramount, whether it's Nocentelli's lazy riffs echoing ...

Rejuvenation CD music
$11.69 Although the Meters had scored a pair of hits on the band's self-titled debut ("Cissy Strut," "Sophisticated Cissy"), the instrumental quartet was still busy churning out sessions at the New Orleans studio of Allen Tousaint and Marshall Sehorn. Between backing such names as Lee Dorsey and Betty Harris, the band cranked out a follow-up that was even funkier than its debut.
When these songs aren't busy getting basted by Art Neville's succulent-sounding organ ("Pungee") or spiced up by guitarist Leo Nocentelli's licks ("9 'Til 5"), the rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Ziggy Modeliste keeps the stew cooking with plenty of bouncy grooves ("Funky Miracle.") The best example of the Meters' ability to reside squarely in the pocket is the infectious title track, which is inspired by a misfiring auto engine and dominated by Modeliste's whip-smart ...
| | Meters Struttin' CD (1970)
Rejuvenation music CDs
$11.65 When the Meters went into Cosimo Matassa's New Orleans studio in 1970 to cut STRUTTIN, the band already had two albums under its belt and a lifetime of experience, thanks to thousands of hours of session work done for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehorn.
On the band's third album, the Meters continued recording instrumentals, but vocals start to creep into the mix for the first time. Organ player Art Neville was chosen to sing (by virtue of the fact that he'd already sang some sides as a solo performer as far back as 1955). Among the selections he croons are a cover of "Wichita Lineman," Lee Dorsey's 1963 smash "Ride Your Pony," and a sweet reading of soul singer Ty Hunter's "Darling, Darling, Darling." The only original sung by Neville is the previously unreleased Otis Redding-inspired "Funky Meters' Soul." Needless to say, the remaining members (guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Ziggy Modeliste) keep everything cooking, whether Nevillew is belting vocals out or not. Among the ...
| | Meters Fire On The Bayou CD (1975)
Rejuvenation songs
$11.59 The Meters released FIRE ON THE BAYOU shortly before embarking on the Rolling Stones' 1975 tour as an opening act. Essentially a love letter to the band's New Orleans hometown, the album also heralded the arrival of fifth member Cyril Neville, younger brother of keyboardist Art. His additional vocals added a soulful edge to songs such as the brassy "Out In the Country" and the crackling "Talkin' Bout New Orleans." Other numbers honoring the Big Easy include the choppily funky title track, a peppy cover of Jody Levens' "Mardi Gras Mambo," and the rollicking "They All Ask'd for You," a novelty song based on an old New Orleans lullaby.
Elsewhere, The Meters travel down some interesting creative avenues, notably in the cool ambiance of "Middle of the Road," an instrumental honoring guitarist Leo Nocentelli's jazz heroes, and a rhythmically rich cover of Argent's "Liar." Much of FIRE ON THE BAYOU is defined by all five members randomly slipping in and out of the rhythm, resulting in laid-back funk such as ...
