The title King of Clubs led some to believe that Paul Gilbert's CD contained club music, which could mean anything from house, Latin freestyle, and hip-house to techno and industrial noise. But you won't find anything club-oriented or dance-minded on this album. Nor will you find music along the lines of the hard rock band Gilbert had belonged to, Mr. Big. Rather, King of Clubs is a celebration of power pop, and the singer/guitarist sounds undeniably inspired as he draws on influences ranging from the Beatles and the Byrds to Cheap Trick and Elvis Costello. When Gilbert tears into such melodic but rockin' offerings as "Vinyl," "I'm Just in Love," and "Champagne," it's obvious that King of Clubs was an album he really wanted to record. Lovers of hook-laden power pop shouldn't miss this one. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Grand Funk Railroad Survival CD (1971) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
King Of Clubs songs
$9.45 By the time Grand Funk Railroad came to make Survival in January 1971, Cleveland Recording had moved to new quarters, and the group had become a national phenomenon, its last two albums Top Ten million-sellers. They spent a relatively luxurious six weeks or so on the record, and the results showed; Survival was the best-sounding and the best-played album they had yet made. Such assessments are, of course, relative, however. The group's playing remained rudimentary, especially in the rhythm section, and its sense of song construction was simple and repetitious. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Mark Farner sang ...

King Of Clubs album
$10.09 Here's what Sweden's At the Gates told us with their first album, The Red in the Sky Is Ours: they were from, er, Sweden; they were very upset about something -- probably their parents; they played extremely fast and furious; and they pretty much sounded like a "baby" version of Entombed. Later on, their contributions would rank among the best death metal around, but for now it's best to focus on the title track and the latter-day concert favorite "Kingdom Gone" -- the spots where the early band shows particular inspiration. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Here's what Sweden's At the Gates told us with their first album, The Red in the Sky Is Ours: they were from, er, Sweden; they were very upset about something -- probably their parents; they played extremely fast and furious; and they pretty much sounded like a "baby" version of Entombed, offering little in the way of innovation to the booming Gothenburg death metal scene. And that's pretty much it. Later on, their contributions would ...
| | Jimmy Cliff Goodbye Yesterday CD (1970)
King Of Clubs CD music
$16.89 With an uncanny and catchy blend of reggae and pop, Jimmy Cliff (vocals) was able to not only successfully cross musical genres, but also become (perhaps best) known as the star of the cinematic adaptation of The Harder They Come (1973). This nine-cut anthology gathers a host of 45s and otherwise hard-to-find material. Although initially compiled in the mid-'70s, Goodbye Yesterday (2004) has remained elusive prior to being issued by Universal Music's limited-edition online boutique, Hip-O Select. The majority of the inclusions ...

While many teenage girls are just beginning to decide what they want to do when they grow up, Georgia's Amber Brooke is already well on her way to a successful musical career. Amber's album, with the tongue in cheek title Don't Label Me, was released just after her sixteenth birthday ...
