| | Raven Stay Hard CD Raven Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Although considered a very important contributing force to the emergence of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Raven's grip on musical (and lyrical) credibility was always tenuous. With the release of their first major-label offering, Stay Hard, the trio dropped right through the thin ice of lunk-headed, near cartoonish metal imagery and sound. The pounding intensity of earlier efforts like Rock Until You Drop and Wiped Out made up for the intellectual shortcomings of the band's self-proclaimed athletic rock, but on the heavily commercialized Stay Hard, none of this excitement or energy is present to help the band safe face. Senseless tracks like the title track and "Get it Right" are as pointless and formulaic as bad '80s metal gets, and Raven only reference their pure metal roots only once on the (unintentionally) ironically titled instrumental "The Bottom Line." Pure energy and enthusiasm is what separated -- or perhaps saved -- this group, and sadly there is hardly any of it on Stay Hard, a record that signaled the decline of an influential, but limited, metal band. ~ Vincent Jeffries

| | Axe Nemesis CD (1983)
Stay Hard CD music
$10.49 An electrifying stew of hard rock, biker rock, Southern rock, and keyboard rock (we're talking 1983 after all), Nemesis may easily be Axe's defining statement: The band wants nothing more than airwave domination and to come into your town to help you party down. Ripped opener "Heat in the Street" bears a similar title to "Rock 'N' Roll Party in the Streets," Axe's biggest-ever hit from their previous offering, Offering (the CD reissue erroneously christens the song "Heat in the Night" but all that matters is Nemesis made it to disc), yet despite the obvious leitmotif, nothing can touch this red-hot, hard luck, fugitive tale which takes every right turn while crashing and burning in a league with the immortal Motörhead; Axe is always geared for the radio, though, throwing in keys and vocoder for a walloping slab of two-ton American rock. "Eagle Flies Alone" soars skyward as endearingly as fellow knuckle-head Sammy Hagar's "Eagles Fly," only Axe kicks it out four years earlier. Axe also beats the Crüe to bat with the lascivious "Girls Girls Girls" (backing vocals by the Mountain Jack Sluggettes). "Foolin' Your Mama Again" sneaks around a melodic outlaw chorus, and the hard-working Edgar Winter boogie, "Keep Playing That Rock 'n' Roll" is still another great, innocuous burner. The boys prove to be utterly fearless and amiable, forcing keys on guitars while swerving through a blissful riot of clichéd lyrics. "Masquerade" almost ends the LP on a slow ride (replete with a cell-phone ring?) before the drop-dead pounder "Midnight" fires ...
| | Loudness Thunder In The East CD (1985)
Stay Hard music CDs
$10.65 Loudness was a Japanese hard rock quartet that had numerous hit albums in the 80's and early 90's. Thunder In The East reached number 74 on the Billboard charts in 1985. Wounded Bird. 2003.
With 1985's Thunder in the East, Loudness were faced with the daunting challenge of conquering heavy metal fans outside their homeland of Japan for the first time. Knowing that their early sound might prove a tad too heavy and complex for American audiences, the foursome rose to the occasion by dispensing their most melodic compositions ever. Yet, except for a few obvious examples, like "We Could Be Together," first single "Crazy Nights," and the power ballad "Never Change Your Mind," the band doesn't seem at all self-conscious about this transition. A few all-out headbangers like "Get Away" and "Clockwork Toy" are hammered out for good measure, but it's excellent tracks like "Heavy Chains," "The Lines Are Down," and "No Way Out" which obtain the best results by bridging the gap between both extremes and providing the best foundations for Akira Takasaki's incendiary guitar solos. In fact, were it not for singer Minoru Niihara's poor English-speaking skills (which quite understandably result in some amusing lyrical transgressions) little here belies the band's unique origins, and for that they should be applauded. Oh, and the impossibly long guitar riff of "Run for Your Life" has ...

| | Raven Pack Is Back CD (1986)
Stay Hard album
$9.69 The second in a string of lackluster major-label releases for Raven, The Pack Is Back continued the band's mid-'80s streak of more-produced and less-interesting commercial rock offerings. While more coherent and less clichéd than 1985's Stay Hard, this post-Def Leppard attempt at crossing over from the ranks of underground to commercial metal heroes was no less a failure. Simplified, mid-tempo anthems dominate this record's track list, as Raven dishes out dumbed-down gang vocal choruses that want to be anthemic but lack the character and songwriting instincts inherent in the work of more successful hair metal acts, like Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe. The clunky Spencer Davis Group cover, "Gimme Some Lovin'," is just one example of how out of touch Raven had become with their core audience, who felt a much greater allegiance to the group's New Wave ...
| | Rough Cutt/Rough Cutt Wants You CD (2005)
Stay Hard CD music
$10.49 In the midst of the madness that was the hair metal explosion of the '80s, Rough Cutt became one of those bands that time gently buried underneath the weight of music's evolution. Washing ashore in 2005 thanks to Wounded Bird, the first two Rough Cutt records have been reissued and remastered on one disc. Essentially the group's entire recorded works, Rough Cutt/Rough Cutt Wants You! presents the band in all of its unapologetic bombast and excess, complete with pyrotechnics. Fierce rockers with blazing guitar solos are shuffled in between midtempo songs and the gratuitous eerie power ballad for the duration of the 20 songs. The music really isn't ...

| | Beautiful Creatures CD (2001)
Stay Hard songs
$27.99 Led by formerBang Tango frontman Joe Leste, the Beautiful Creatures' debut disc is a non- sentimental journey that connects the attributes of commercial rock with the sonic muscle of contemporary heavy metal. The Beautiful Creatures overwhelming appeal lies in their command of traditional pop/rock songcraft bolstered by expert musicianship. Cuts including "1 A.M.," "Wasted," "New Orleans," and "Goin' Off" encapsulate the qualities that catapulted L.A. Sunset Strip glam to the top of the charts in the '80s: guitar licks a descendent of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin, hooky singalong choruses, and lyrics that depict the decadent side of life with a tinge of sensitivity. Yet this disc is far from a nostalgia trip. The dueling guitars of DJ Ashba and Anthony Focx draw from grunge, avant-garde and traditional blues without a wasted note or meandering off into self-indulgent solos. Bassist Kenny Kweens tastefully employs five-string, lower-register riffs that complement drummer Glen Sobel's relentless four/four hammering. Sean Beavan's simple live-in-the-studio production approach is a perfect fit for this veteran ensemble. "Kicking for Days" displays a flair for the dramatic when the bridge melts into an ethereal half-time groove, and the ballad "Wish" is a romantic ...
