Despite a three-year absence and having replaced half the band, Pist-On's second album, 1999's Sell Out, shows little change over its predecessor. Once again, the band creates a fairly unique combination of heavy, plodding guitars and depressing lyrics and melodies. Overall, the record is a little more cohesive than their debut, as the band generally abandon vocal harmonies and allow singer Henry Font to take center stage. "Rest'"and "When I Go" achieve an interesting effect with interweaving guitar and vocal textures, and deceptively tame numbers such as "31 Degrees" and "Need to Know" slowly build in intensity toward inspired climaxes. The fantastic closer "Waiting to Die" is both unbearably morbid and utterly compelling -- a combination that will make Pist-On very interesting to any fan of inventive heavy music. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

While a very different supporting cast joins Michael Schenker on Unforgiven, this 1999 collection of hard-rocking numbers and swirling guitar solos echoes the return to classic M.S.G. form first accomplished on 1996's Written in the Sand. As the guitarist proved decades ago, there's no mystical chemistry, no mysteriously unifying combination of talents necessary for Schenker to kick out the old-school heavy metal jams with verve and style. Great songwriting? Well, that's another story, but Schenker's appeal was always his energetic guitar performances and rich tone -- of which there is plenty of on Unforgiven. Bon Jovi's 1984 debut not only became a blueprint for the band's multi-platinum releases of later years, but a definitive work for an entire genre. Though scores of short-lived pop-metal bands rocketed to popularity on the success of this release, the time-weathered BON JOVI continues to stand out from the pack.
"Runaway," with its infectious hook and keyboard work from E-Streeter Roy Bittan, was discovered by a New York DJ and gave the band some early exposure. "She Don't Know Me" is a catchy mid-tempo rocker. "Shot Through the Heart" turns the hard-rocking pulse up a few notches, with Richie Sambora letting loose on the kind of solo that would be copied by a plethora of L.A. bands. David Bryan's keyboards, an integral part of the group's sound, work nicely on the melodic rocker "Breakout." At a time when synthesizers dominated the pop landscape, Bon Jovi used them to gloss a heavy-rock foundation. "Come Back" shows the enormity of the charisma and emotion that Jon poured into his singing. BON JOVI is a great debut by a band in its underground, formative stage; a street album from a band hungry to make it.

2001's deceptively named Quietus was Evoken's second full album (following 1998's Embrace the Emptiness and 1996's Shades of Night Descending EP) and it found the group taking measures to tidy up the frayed edges of earlier productions, somewhat, in order to come up with more focused and condensed funeral doom sludge. In every other respect, Quietus was business as (un)usual for these Garden State manic depressives, with continent-sized offerings like "In Pestilence, Burning," "Withering Indignation," and the preceding LP title track, "Embrace the Emptiness" (all of them eight to twelve minutes in length!), boasting long, creeping riffs interwoven with desolate melodic lines, and capped with the most guttural, low-pitched growls achievable by the human larynx (courtesy of lead "Evoker" John Paradiso). Not until the moderately galloping third track, "Tending the Dire Hatred," are listeners given something they can really bang their heads to (in tandem with the most prominent synthesizer backdrops yet), and even the synthesized violins and occasional spoken vocals used on "Where Ghosts Fall Silent" and the monolithic title track, respectively, ...
