| | Have I Sinned: The Greatest Hits Of Donnie Elbert CD (2003)
It's A Beach Thang Vol. 3
$10.69 Donnie Elbert's initial run as a solo artist happened in the late '50s with a series of singles recorded for the King subsidiary Deluxe. All of those sides are collected here, including his one chart hit, the soul-squeezing falsetto masterpiece "What Can I Do." Elbert spent the next decade as a soul gypsy traveling from small label to even smaller label for a single or two before moving on to the next (don't worry, he eventually found a home in the '70s with All Platinum). Added to the Deluxe label catalog here are several sides recorded for the Gateway label in 1964, including a nice ballad, "Who's It Gonna Be," and three pleasingly danceable Motown sound-alikes, "Lily Lou," "Do Whatcha Wanna," and "Run Little Girl." There's also an outtake version of "I Want to Be Loved But Only By You" with the title truncated to "I Want to Be Loved" and ...

| | J J Cale Naturally CD (1971)
It's A Beach Thang Vol. 3
$8.15 NATURALLY has stood up over the years as a perfect debut. When released in 1971, it introduced J.J. Cale's rootsy, laid back grooves to excellent effect, and in the decades since, this album and its follow-up, REALLY, have remained classics of mellow '70s country-rock. Riding on the success and easy blues feel of Eric Clapton's cover of Cale's "After Midnight," NATURALLY goes even deeper into roots music, concocting a mixture of country, blues, and boogie that is full of downhome goodness while it drips with cool.
Cale's version of "After Midnight" is here, as is his loping "Call Me the Breeze" (later covered by Lynyrd Skynyrd), and the minimal blues "Crazy Mama" (a radio hit for Cale). The music is deceptively tricky--the surface textures pull you in like a porch swing, but the interlocking rhythmic base is full of subtle tugs and pulls that are far from ...
| | Joanne Shaw Taylor White Sugar CD (2009)
It's A Beach Thang Vol. 3
$12.89 She's already being called "the new face of the blues" by the press in her native Britain, but her debut album is the first opportunity most Americans will have to hear Joanne Shaw Taylor's sharp, fiery take on blues-based rock. Opening with the dark and sultry "Going Home," Taylor makes her intentions clear from the very beginning: her sound is raw, funky, and soulful, and she's as likely to reference Jimi Hendrix's R&B-inflected blues-rock as Stevie Ray Vaughan's rock-inflected blues. She's also ...

It's A Beach Thang Vol. 3
$9.65 This 1954 album documents the meeting of two great jazz masters--pianist Art Tatum and alto saxophonist Benny Carter. Tatum, known for his blazing solos and harmonic inventiveness, is tempered here by the bluesy sax musings of Carter. The two work off of one another beautifully, ...
| | Deacon John Moore Deacon John's Jump Blues CD (2003)
It's A Beach Thang Vol. 3
$11.89 "The premise here is '50s and '60s New Orleans jump blues led to rock 'n' roll. Forget the premise, or argue about it if you'd prefer. The reality is this disc, built around the considerable talents of guitarist/vocalist Deacon John Moore and a slew of high-powered friends, is a smoking, cooking, rollicking effort packed with powerful Crescent City blues, R&B and rock 'n' roll.It doesn't hurt that the Deacon played guitar on many of the hits that came out of Cosimo Matassa's legendary New Orleans recording studio. And it certainly helps that Moore is joined in this labor of musical love by the likes of Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Wardell Quezergue, the Zion Harmonizers, Teedy Boutté, Henry Butler, Amadee Castenell, a fat horn section and the best rhythm players in New Orleans. From 'Jumpin' in the Morning' through 'Going Back to New Orleans' the CD turns the spotlight on classic sounds. Those sounds are so soulful, so, well, jumping, that nostalgia need not figure in." -Jim Beal Jr., San Antonio Express-News"The album showcases vocalist/guitarist Deacon John Moore, one of the great lights of the Big Easy music scene for more than 40 years. . . . Special moments include Teedy Boutté's vocal on 'Piece of My Heart,' the classic jump-blues numbers 'Jumpin' in the Morning' and 'Hook, Line and Sinker/Go On Fool,' and the Zion Harmonizers' gospel tune 'Jesus Is on the Main Line.' An excellent history project." -Phillip Van Vleck, Billboard"the music, from the 1950's and 1960's, still puts the New Orleans roll in rock 'n' roll." -Jon Pareles, New York ...
