Fans of Birmingham, England's Merseybeat/British Invasion quintet the Fortunes who are looking for a definitive best-of will have to keep looking, but for the money, this lovingly crafted collection from the Taragon label does pretty well for itself. Focusing on the late-'60s/early-'70s output from the group, The Very Best of the Fortunes (1967-1972) may not contain "You've Got Your Troubles" (the band's most recognizable single), "Caroline," "Here It Comes Again," or "The Golden Ring," but it does have 12 choice cuts from the band's revival years, including "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again," "Gasoline Alley Bred," and "Fire Brigade." Unlike previous compilations, all of the tracks here are originals and not the re-recordings that have plagued recent attempts at an anthology. Fans of the Moody Blues, the Zombies, and the Hollies should find much to love here, as will anybody who appreciates strong melodies with tight harmonies. ~ James Christopher Monger

The Commodores had a schizophrenic split between hard funk and soulful ballads. This 11-song collection of hits and album tracks sounds like the work of two different bands. The soulful ballads are represented by standout tracks like "This Is Your Life," "Three Times a Lady," "Painted Picture," and the lovely acoustic "Sail On." The funk side of the group is exemplified by the mighty, mighty "Brick House," which is the funkiest track here (and most anywhere). Also pretty funky are the slick and slinky "Sorry to Say," "Thumpin' Music," and "Machine Gun," an instrumental with some wonderfully cheesy synth playing. Despite the presence of so many fine tracks and the low price, ...

Very Best Of The Fortunes (1967-1972) album

Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much the same musicians. Producer Kyle Lehning has the sounds ...

If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen ...

Welsh trio Stereophonics' fifth album dishes up seriously powerful hard rock that distinguishes itself in sound and attack from the band's earlier releases. With the exception of a few cuts (the pulsing ballad "Rewind," the expansive "Lolita"), LANGUAGE. SEX. VIOLENCE. OTHER? packs a remarkably ferocious punch. No one would claim Stereophonics are breaking new musical ground here, yet their combination of post-grunge (bringing to mind Foo Fighters ...
