During the mid-'70s, an era when interest in pre-bop jazz was near its lowest, Soprano Summit was formed and somehow flourished. Co-led by Kenny Davern (on soprano, clarinet, and C-melody sax) and Bob Wilber (tripling on soprano, clarinet, and alto), the group offered strong swing-based solos, a colorful repertoire, and, best of all, exciting ensembles. This two-CD set features the 1976-1977 edition of Soprano Summit with Marty Grosz's acoustic guitar and banjo acting as a third important voice while bassist George Duvivier and either Bobby Rosengarden and Fred Stoll on drums offer suitable support. Reissued are two complete LPs and in addition there are five previously unreleased selections from a live performance, along with a 13-minute "Jazzspeak" during which Marty Grosz talks (with humor) about the history of the important group. Some of the many highlights of this essential set include "Grenadilla Stomp," "Ole Miss," "When Day Is Done," "Crazy Rhythm," and two versions of "Nagasaki." ~ Scott Yanow Soprano Summit Review

Soprano Summit album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than ...
| | Arthur Blythe Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
Soprano Summit CD music
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal ...

Soprano Summit songs
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened ...

| | Ted Hawkins Final Tour CD (1998)
Soprano Summit CD music
$13.19 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
This collection of solo acoustic performances was recorded live in 1994, just months before Hawkins's death. After a checkered recording career and years spent performing his unique brand of soul tinged with country and blues for passersby at Venice Beach, California, Hawkins finally reached the masses with his music via the spacious coffers of DGC Records. This live album, though, captures him at his most riveting, using only his acoustic guitar and gritty, Sam Cooke-cum-Richie Havens vocal styling to deliver 20 mostly self-penned tunes.

| | Ken Hatfield Dyad CDs (2000)
Soprano Summit music CDs
$18.99 Nine original jazz compositions--five with Brazilian overtones--performed by an ensemble of guitar, bass, drums, and violin, augmented with viola, Brazilian percussion instruments, and vocals. Throughout the history of jazz there have been notable ensembles with a front line of guitar and violin, such as Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, John McLaughlin and Jerry Goodman (Mahavishnu Orchestra), and Steve Morse and Mark O'Connor (Dixie Dregs). In his CD "Dyad," Ken Hatfield has expanded upon this tradition by composing music which employs contrapuntal compositional devices and Brazilian rhythms such as Baiao, Samba, and Bossa Nova in a jazz context featuring a front line of classical guitar and violin. On "Dyad," ...
