The Trio was an ongoing group of all-stars that began during the 1970s with pianist Hank Jones, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Grady Tate, though it was intended to be a meeting of equals rather than led by one musician. By the time of this 1994 session, Derek Smith had taken over the piano chair and Bobby Rosengarden the drums to accompany Hinton. Producer Hank O'Neal had attempted to record the Trio live during two different jazz cruises, though technical problems prevented the issuing of any of the performances. The third time was the charmed one, as they utilized Rudy Van Gelder's studio instead. The musicians cover a wide range of material, from a bossa nova medley to standards from the 1930s and 1940s and more recent jazz compositions like the breezy "Bluesette" and a strutting "Shiny Stockings." One can almost see the players smiling at one another during each take. The bonus "Jazzspeak" features the three musicians reminiscing with one another in the studio, while Smith overdubbed an improvised blues in the background. Since this is one of Milt Hinton's final recordings before he retired from playing in his mid-eighties, it should be of great interest to the late bassist's fans. ~ Ken Dryden

Trio: 1994 album
$13.09 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed ...

Trio: 1994 album
$9.89 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.
WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful album, helped--no doubt--by its highly provocative cover art. The tunes are mostly unknown ...

Trio: 1994 CD music
$7.59 A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on Miles's aesthetic, to ...

Trio: 1994 songs
$8.95 An intricate, deliberately idiosyncratic record, assembled piece by piece, Boulders perfectly captures Roy Wood's peculiar genius, more so than anything else he recorded. All of his obsessions are here -- classical music, psychedelia, pre-Beatles pop, pastoral folk ballads, absurdist humor, studio trickery, and good old-fashioned rock & roll -- assembled in a gracefully eccentric fashion. Some listeners may find that eccentricity a little alienating, but it's the core of Wood's music. He wrote tuneful, accessible songs, but indulged his passions and weird ideas, so even the loveliest melodies and catchiest ...
