| | Chico Freeman Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
Dorothy Donegan Trio With Clark Terry CD music
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further ...

| | Modern Jazz Quartet European Concert Volumes 1 & 2 CD (1960)
Dorothy Donegan Trio With Clark Terry CD music
$11.59 Recorded live in Scandinavia in April 1960. Originally released on Atlantic (2-603). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn and Jule Foster.
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York).
Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed at jazz's boundaries from the outside, to create a music that swung without edges or fragmented harmonic structures. Instead -- as this album perhaps more than any of their studio recordings exemplifies -- they used concepts of time, space, meter, rhythm, and changes to weave together ...
| | Hot Notes: New York, Vol. 1 CD (1996)
Dorothy Donegan Trio With Clark Terry music CDs
$18.05 During the second half of the 1920s, many hot jazz groups made records including quite a few that would later on be forgotten except by collectors. This CD (put out by the British Frog label) is quite valuable for containing the six selections cut by the underrated Savoy Bearcats (including "Stampede" and "How Could I Be Blue"), three numbers from Lloyd Scott's Orchestra (which served as the recording debut of trombonist Dickie Wells), three tunes by Leroy Smith (highlighted by a remarkable three-minute hot jazz performance of "Rhapsody in Blue" that includes all of the themes) and Joe Steele's two titles. In addition, singer Evelyn Preer is heard in a rare number backed by Duke Ellington's Orchestra and the master takes of Charlie Johnson's Paradise Ten's 1927-29 records (featuring Benny Carter, Benny Waters and Jabbo Smith among others) round out the reissue. The Charlie Johnson titles are available (along with their many alternate takes) elsewhere but otherwise the consistently enjoyable music on this 25-song CD is otherwise pretty scarce. ~ Scott Yanow
25 tracks from 1926-29 feat. Savoy Bearcats, Evelyn Preer w. Duke Ellington & His Orch., Lloyd Scott's Orch., ...
| | All The Aces: The Best Of Motorhead CD (1993) (Import) United Kingdom
Dorothy Donegan Trio With Clark Terry songs
$13.79 Contains five previously released albums NO SLEEP 'TIL HAMMERSMITH, ACE OF SPADES, BOMBER, OVERKILL, and MOTORHEAD plus a CD called MELTDOWN, which contains rare studio and live tracks.
1993 saw another addition to the long line of Motorhead compilations in ALL THE ACES. Just about every mega-decibel classic from Lemmy and company can be found here, as well as a bonus live disc of an early Motorhead-related side project, featuring guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke and drummer Phil Taylor.
For some of the all-time best British heavy metal, you can't go wrong with such mean rockers as "Ace of Spades," "(We Are) The Road Crew," "Iron Fist," "Bomber," and "Motorhead," as well as such oft-overlooked tracks as "Love Me Like a Reptile" and "No Class." The aforementioned bonus disc doesn't ...
