After moving on from the short-lived Air Miami, Teenbeat owner Mark Robinson apparently decided to return to more rock-oriented music -- Flin-Flon, his new project, drops the atmospheric tendencies of Air Miami's work in favor of three-piece indie-rock that's more in line with his first band, Unrest. Teenbeat's catalog order form refers to Air Miami as "new wave power-pop," but that title is far more appropriate for an album like A-OK, which rushes through bass-driven pop songs without ever getting too elaborate about it. The album is likely to disappoint those who enjoyed the gentle, textured quality of Air Miami's Me, Me, Me, but it's a pleasant return for the rock end of Robinson's fan base. ~ Nitsuh Abebe

| | Barry White All-Time Greatest Hits CD (1995)
A-Ok music CDs
$11.99 Barry White's ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS contains the original single versions of his classic solo hits, as well as two songs White performed as the lead vocalist of the Love Unlimited Orchestra. All tracks were previously released on the 20th Century Records label.
All tracks digitally remastered by Gary Mayo (Polygram Studios).
It took quite a while for a definitive Barry White compilation to hit the market, but All-Time Greatest Hits -- part of Mercury's Funk Essentials series -- finally filled the bill in 1995. Boasting a full 20 tracks from White's heyday of 1973-1978, more than half of which made the R&B Top Ten, All-Time Greatest Hits is easily the most generous single-disc White collection on the market. It includes the edited single versions, not the full-length album tracks, which actually makes for a more digestible introduction to White's achievements. Like his forebear Isaac Hayes, White was not just a deep-voiced crooner, but a talented producer and arranger who'd spent years honing his craft behind the scenes in the industry. And like Hayes, White spent a great deal of time setting up moods on his albums, using lush, sweeping orchestrations to ...
| | Best Of Sade CD (1994)
A-Ok songs
$9.59 Digitally remastered by Tom Coyne (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Nigerian vocalist Sade Adu has carved out a cosmpolitan niche for herself over the past decade, gathering together elements of cool jazz, samba, reggae, funk and pop all under the pastoral umbrella of her suede-and-velvet voice. A pop stylist with a musical universe all her own, Sade has endured and matured over the past decade, seemingly unaffected by changes in taste and fashion--a movement unto herself.
As her most recent single (Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone To Love" from the PHILADELPHIA soundtrack) illustrates, Sade's coy caressing voice speaks more of commitment and trust, of relationships in flux ("Nothing Can Come Between Us") than of the heat of the moment: from the the coy duplicity of "Smooth Operator" to the positive reinforcement of "The Sweetest Taboo" and the sweet ambiguities of "Love Is Stronger Than Pride."

A-Ok album
$13.65 Baby Beesh's first album for the Houston-based Dope House imprint finds him mixing his Latin-inflected West Coast flow with Dirty South beats and flavor, courtesy of his new Texan friends. The result is quite effective. Originally from the Bay Area, Beesh was a protégé of legendary Hispanic MC Kid Frost (aka Frost). The influence is apparent in his smooth style, but Beesh doesn't let his heritage dominate Savage Dreams. Rather than make his solo debut a "Latino rap album," it is mostly a Dirty South ...
