Purchase Black Cow CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Exploding Hearts Guitar Romantic CD (2003)
Black Cow album
$9.85 At first glance, the Exploding Hearts seem like mere revivalists. From the pink and yellow cover to their 1977 looks to their influences, it would be easy to dismiss them. But you need to hold the phone a minute and listen, because the Exploding Hearts are the best punk band to come along in a long time, maybe since the original wave. About those influences, here is a partial list: the early Clash if Mick Jones wrote all the songs and the Only Ones or Buzzcocks at their emotional best, but also classic power pop sounds like a (much) tougher Rubinoos, rock & roll like a tighter and sober New York Dolls, and the lo-fi approach of Billy Childish. Guitar Romantic is an amazingly raw and melodic debut, fully realized and original despite the obvious debt to the punk past. It is difficult to pinpoint just what it is about the band ...
| | Saturday Looks Good To Me All Your Summer Songs CD (2003)
Black Cow CD music
$10.15 Even though the largely emo-based Polyvinyl Records doesn't seem like the most natural home for Saturday Looks Good to Me's winsome, nostalgic pop, the undeniable emotional pull and heartfelt delivery of Fred Thomas and company's music makes it a better fit than one might expect. All Your Summer Songs, the group's fifth album and Polyvinyl debut, is another triumph, expressing the complexities of being in and out of love with deceptively naïve music and lyrics that are wise beyond their years. While Motown, Phil Spector, and the Beach Boys still exert a strong influence on Saturday Looks Good to Me's sound -- especially on "Alcohol" and "Ultimate Stars" -- the band explores an entire bandwidth of AM radio ...

| | Books Lemon Of Pink CD (2003) (Import)
Black Cow songs
$29.49 Like 2002's Thought for Food, The Lemon of Pink combines experimental collage technique with an organic, folky mixture of banjo, guitar, violin, simple vocal melodies, and snippets of conversation. The collage technique snaps like that of the United States of America, but is used to introduce glitches in the melodic elements, whereas the U.S.A. ...
| | Walkmen Bows And Arrows CD (2004)
Black Cow album
$11.39 A rock revivalist opus similar to those by the Strokes and Stripes, the Walkmen's sophomore effort is a genuine rock "album" in the traditional sense: each song is unique to the others and it all fits together as a cohesive work of art. Instant classics include "The Rat," with vocalist Hamilton Leithauser screaming out with so much lonely rage that two tracks later (on "Little House of ...

| | Marty Dek-Tette Paich In The Studio And In Concert CDs (2000)
Black Cow music CDs
$9.89 IN THE STUDIO AND IN CONCERT contains the two previously released albums REUNION (1988) and IN CONCERT TOKYO (1989) in one 2-disc package.
Includes liner notes by Chris Albertson and Jonathan Schwartz.
Recorded live at Kan-i Hoken Hall, Tokyo, Japan in December 1988. Originally released on Concord (4382).
This posthumous reissue combines 1988's Reunion and 1989's In Concert Tokyo in a single two-disc package. The two Concord albums marked Mel Torme's first collaboration with arranger Marty Paich and his "Dek-tette" since 1957. In his mid-sixties at the time of the recordings, Torme sounds incredibly robust and inventive. The ten-piece band is just the right touch -- small enough to swing with intimacy and economy, big enough to color a ballad with regal textures. Torme may be thought of as the quintessential old-fashioned crooner, but here he puts his successful spin on some excellent modern material, including Chick Corea's "Spain" (with lyrics by Al Jarreau), as well as "Walk Between the Raindrops" and "The Goodbye Look," two tracks from Donald Fagen's The Nightfly. Paich's electric piano on many of the tracks adds another hip, modern touch. But the bulk of the material includes hot jazz ("Sweet Georgia Brown"), swinging standards ("Just In Time," "More ...

| | David Ford I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I've Caused CD (2005) (Import) Import; Germany
Black Cow album
$30.55 I SINCERELY APOLOGISE TO ALL showcases British indie singer-songwriter David Ford.
If you were to buy David Ford's solo debut based only on the album cover, you might be in for a bit of a surprise. Instead of the hard, angry, loud music that the blurred female figure and the obtrusive parental advisory sticker suggest, I Sincerely Apologise for All the Trouble I've Caused is an emotional, pretty record that finds Ford more than willing to not only wear his heart on his sleeve, but give you the entire shirt as well. He generally sticks to the standard adult contemporary pop/rock love song, but he's insightful enough to bring complexity to what would otherwise be straightforward pieces. In "Katie," for example, he professes his love for the title character, but he also seems to be more bewildered by his feelings than charmed ("Katie will you say to me?/Will you just ...
