Alcantara songs
$13.15 Dark and sensual, A PRAYER FOR THE SOUL OF LAYLA is a trip into the Middle East with a knowledgeable guide, Jamshied Sharifi. The Iranian-American keyboardist was born in Kansas City and studied American jazz before turning his interests to the music he learned from his father. With A PRAYER FOR THE SOUL OF LAYLA, Sharifi creates a singular fusion of Arabesque themes with a contemporary New Age sound that results in a beautiful, provocative recording. Sharifi works magic to coax organic, natural sounds from his synthesizers, and has invited some stellar world fusion artists into the studio to flesh out his sound. Hassan Hakmoun contributes some unworldly vocalizing to the albums first track, "Tariqat," which also features his sintir, a three-stringed ...

$6.99 Combining traditional ideas of marriage and family with the realities of modern life, MONSOON WEDDING is a lighthearted film from director Mira Nair (SALAAM BOMBAY!). The majority of the film takes place inside the home of an extended Punjabi family living in New Delhi who has gathered together for the arranged wedding of Adita (Vasundhara Das). She is to marry Hemant (Parveen Dabaas), a man who works in the United States. This means leaving her family home to go live with him, and though Adita says she welcomes the new opportunity, it is clear that she already feels homesick. Also at issue is the fact that she is still in love with her former boss, Vikram (Sameer Arya), a television producer who promises to divorce his wife but never does. Though Adita is careful ...

Alcantara music CDs
$15.65 Experience is the best teacher, and Dawn Upshaw's third foray in to the world of American popular song proves it. Although I WISH IT SO (songs of Sondheim, Bernstein, Blitzstein, and Weill) and DAWN UPSHAW SINGS RODGERS & HART demonstrate an excellent grasp of the style of singing required for non-"classical" theatre songs, this disc of Vernon Duke surpasses its predecessors.
Duke wrote songs for a number of stage shows and revues from the 1930s through the 1950s, and had the benefit of collaborating with some of the best lyricists of the time, including E. Y. Harburg and Ira Gershwin. The results were songs which are jewels of the repertoire, classics like "Autumn in New York" and "I Like the Likes of You." Upshaw presents Duke's work here in a comfortable style and with obvious love for the material. This is no mere nod to popular music from an operatic diva; Upshaw's devotion to 20th century music of the United States goes beyond classical and concert works. She has developed a cabaret-type sound appropriate to the songs, and works well with her collaborators, among them Fred Hersch and John Pizzarelli.
Principally recorded at The Hit Factory, New York, New York in March 1998. Includes ...
