| | Lavay Smith One Hour Mama CD (1996)
Inspiration
$12.95 The current swing revival, a very healthy development that has given younger dancers an opportunity to jitterbug to four/four music has, ironically, resulted in quite a bit of erratic music. Some of the so-called swing bands are really just playing rockabilly, '50s pop, or mere imitations of Louis Prima and Cab Calloway mixed in with R&B from later periods. But there are a few groups that really are playing swing, including singer Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. The talented Smith has an appealing voice that sometimes sounds close to Dinah Washington's, but it's also flexible enough to handle material ranging from Bessie Smith to Anita O'Day. And, ...
| | Marcia Ball Presumed Innocent CD (2001) Digipak
Inspiration
$15.25 Those looking for blues, R&B, rootsy rock & roll, gospel-tinged ballads, loungy supper club jazz, and boogie-woogie piano pounding all led by an instantly recognizable powerhouse voice infused with gritty soul will rejoice with Marcia Ball. Although this is only her sixth album since her career shifted into high gear with 1984's Soulful Dress, Ball hits all those bases and more on her debut for Alligator. She's as comfortable with heart-wrenching lost-love songs like this album's touching "Let the Tears Roll Down" as with loose-limbed swampy piano/accordion-powered rockers such as "Louella." Her show-stopping piano virtuosity takes a back ...

| | Debbie Davies All I Found CD (2005)
Inspiration
$15.05 Debbie Davies doesn't play straight blues on All I Found, her eighth release as a bandleader and her first for Telarc Records, so much as a kind of blues-inflected country-pop somewhat reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt, only without Raitt's distinctive, drop-dead slide guitar technique. Make no mistake, Davies plays some solid guitar on this album (she got her start playing in Albert ...
| | Gerald Levert Groove On CD (1995)
Inspiration
$8.29 All songs co-written by Gerald Levert except "I'd Give Anything" (C. Farren/J. Steele/V. Milamed/L. Foster) and "Someone" (Greg Charley).
Gerald Levert oozes seduction from every pore of his musical body--turning clever lines, smooth silky vocals, and sickly clean beats into siren calls which seduce his soon-to-be vanquished paramours. Throughout GROOVE ON Levert exudes an abundant amount of each of those qualities, and does so with a sleek candle-light, soul-man demeanor well-suited for a singer who helped invent the very pose he's projecting.
Gerald Levert's vocal abilities were inherited from his father--O'Jay's vocalist, Eddie Levert--but his position as one of gentleman soul's elder statesman was clearly earned as a member of LeVert. That group, which also featured his brother Sean, helped sow the first seeds of R&B's post-Cameo direction in the mid to late 80's. (The band's 1987 smash "Casanova" is a classic new jack single, and required listening for all the four-part harmony romantics currently blazing the charts.)
On GROOVE ON we find Levert doing what he knows best: crooning his way in and out of hearts and bedrooms. With the help of co-producer Edwin "Tony" Nicholas, Levert lays down a cornucopia of slow and mid-tempo grooves that listeners won't be able to escape.
Gerald Levert's emotive baritone excels on Groove On. The ...

| | E Jaye Brown Funky Good Time CD (2009)
Inspiration
$9.59 A "A Funky Good Time" was a labor of love for E. Jaye Brown. Growing up listening to blues artists such as Bobby Womack, Johnny Taylor, Brook Benton and Benny Latimore, his goal was to recapture that southern blues and R&B style. The CD is a mixture of hand-clapping, foot-stomping feel-good party songs and soulful slide guitar ballads.Born in Charleston, South Carolina, under the sign of Aries, E. Jaye has been said to be one of South Florida’s most energetic and motivational entertainers. Soon after being discharged from the Navy, E. Jaye began performing in local South Florida nightclubs, weddings and corporate events. During his career, E. Jaye worked with such greats as Sylvester Stewart, otherwise known as Sly Stone ...
