Peter Allen album
$7.69 Peter Allen's second live album reflected the changes in his career since his first, It Is Time for Peter Allen, released eight years earlier. Back in 1977, Allen was emerging from being a cabaret singer into being a pop/rock entertainer capable of filling theaters, though the core of his act remained a set of heartfelt ballads. In a sense, he was the same kind of artist by the mid-1980s, but he had become somewhat more flamboyant, and his audience had grown. Captured Live at Carnegie Hall had an ease and assurance that the previous set, for all its excitement, lacked. Now, Allen was an Oscar winner, and he played "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" (a song to which, in truth, he had contributed only one line) without comment. Also in the set were some of the pop/rock songs he had been putting on recent albums, such as his lone pop chart single, "Fly Away." And he was performing several songs that he had written for his upcoming Broadway musical, Legs Diamond. Allen's wildly enthusiastic audience enjoyed these additions to his set, but they really went crazy for the older material, such as when "Fly Away" segued into the crowd pleaser "I Go to Rio," and when, near the end of the show, he performed older songs like the hit "Don't Cry out Loud" and his tribute to his ex-mother-in-law Judy Garland, "Quiet Please, There's a Lady on Stage." But they loved everything he did -- "Who do you think I am, Bruce Springsteen?," he asked at one point -- and why not? He had made his name in New York City, and Carnegie Hall is, in a sense, the most prestigious nightclub in town. Peter Allen is likely to ...

| | Dar Williams Honesty Room CD (1993)
Peter Allen music CDs
$15.65 Upon the release of this debut album, Massachusetts native Dar Williams quickly won comparisons to Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Such assessments are complimentary, but Williams doesn't take herself quite as seriously as those seminal soprano folksingers. Williams has a wicked sense of humor. She delivers her witty story-songs in a conversational manner, accompanying her clear, high voice with clean acoustic guitar. Sisters Katryna and Nerissa Nields provide backup vocals on several songs.
Williams is blessed with an excellent memory of her childhood experiences and with a vivid imagination. In "When I Was a Boy," she sings about her adolescence as if she had grown up male. This plaintive and introspective, yet subtly humorous, song typifies about half of the Williams oeuvre. The other half consists of fast-paced, overtly funny recollections and imaginings. "The Babysitter's Here" is a hilarious ode to a babysitter on whom Williams had a crush while growing up. But such is Williams' cleverness that one can never be too sure what is fact here and what is fiction.
Recorded at Shoestring Studio, Belchertown, Massachusetts; ...
| | Best Of Tracey Ullman CD (1991)
Peter Allen songs
$9.99 Metro's The Best Of showcases Tracey Ullman's new wave and girl group-inspired music, including her brilliant, Kirsty MacColl-penned single and Top Ten hit "They Don't Know About Us." Though her covers of songs like the Waitresses' "I Know What Boys Like" and Blondie's "(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear" aren't quite up to par with the originals -- or as distinctive as her own songs -- Ullman still brings enough sassy flair to them to make them entertaining in their own right. Other highlights include her version of Doris Day's "Move Over Darling," "You Broke My Heart in 17 Places" -- another track written by MacColl -- "Breakaway," and "Sunglasses." With its mix of highlights from Ullman's albums You Broke My Heart in 17 Places and You Caught Me Out and several B-sides, The Best Of is nearly as good a retrospective of Ullman's all too brief recording career as Rhino's enduring The Best of Tracey Ullman. Even though she didn't pursue music after she had success as a comedienne and actress, the knowing innocence and clever, versatile wit she displays in those arenas is also what makes her music so enjoyable as well. ~ Heather Phares
Long before the variety show, HBO specials, or successful standup career, there was Tracey Ullman, the singer. And while her releases were scarce and garnered little attention in the U.S., she was met with moderate success elsewhere. This Rhino collection compiles every last notable thing she committed to tape, ...
