(1 Customer Review)
Alice Cooper has been the subject of many compilations over the years, especially those that chronicle his late-'80s comeback period. This 1998 Australian release, FREEDOM FOR FRANKENSTEIN: HITS & PIECES 1984-91, is definitely the best of the bunch. What makes it better than the similar PRINCE OF DARKNESS compilation is that this collection includes his best work from MCA and Epic recordings, plus rarities and live renditions of several early-'70s classics. Listeners get an extensive overview the material that helped fuel Cooper's resurgence.
Pop-metal compositions like "He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask)," "Teenage Frankenstein," and "Freedom" are included from Cooper's MCA years. More commercially successful work--"Poison," "Hey Stoopid," "Feed My Frankenstein," and "Sideshow"--is also included. Hardcore fans will love the wealth of rarities, including "I Got a Line on You" (from the movie IRON EAGLE II), a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire," and "It Rained All Night." The addition of live material from 1987 ("Go To Hell," "Ballad of Dwight Fry") and 1991 ("Sick Things," a medley of "Only Women Bleed/Wind Up Toy"), helps round this collection out and make it a perfect companion to 1974's GREATEST HITS.
Australian exclusive release featuring 18 tracks from his MCA & Epic years. Also features four raretracks previously issued as only European and Japanese bonus tracks.
Personnel includes: Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Slash, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Joe Perry (guitar).
Producers include: Michael Wagener, Beau Hill, Desmond Child, Bob Pfeifer, Peter Collins.

Freedom For Frankenstein music CDs
$13.25 Ma Rainey's final 23 recordings find her stubbornly bucking the tides of stylistic change by working with accompanists who played up the rural folk blues element. Exhibit A is her Tub Jug Washboard Band, a scruffy little outfit securely moored by the sounds of Carl Reid huffing on a whiskey jug with banjo licks by Martell Pettiford, kazoo and washboard by one Herman Brown, and Georgia Tom Dorsey at the piano. The blend of sounds and textures was very successful, and it is this session that gave the world "Hear Me Talking to You," the "Hustlin' Blues," and "Prove It on Me Blues," a proud statement from a woman who prefers the intimate company of other females. With "Daddy Goodbye Blues" Rainey appears like the setting sun as she scales her accompaniment down to Dorsey's piano and some very fine guitar playing by Hudson Whitaker, also known as Tampa Red. These are some of the most authentically bluesy recordings of her entire career. In the refrain from the "Black Eye Blues," an unflinching report on domestic violence, the singer addresses her abuser with the words: "You low down alligator/just watch me, sooner or later/I'll catch you with your britches down." Rainey's last two recordings were duets performed in October and December 1928 with singing banjoist ...

So you think you know Sheryl Crow, eh? Well, the closest thing to what one might consider a "trademark" Crow tune on C'MON, C'MON is probably "Soak up the Sunshine," whose ironic good-timey feel and slide guitar recall TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB. "You're An Original" is a ' 70s-style bluesy hard-rocker whose stylistic bent is further underlined by the guest vocal appearance of Lenny Kravitz. The low-key "Safe and Sound" combines Beatlesque chord progressions with contemporary R&B loops for an interesting meld of sounds. The plangent guitars of the title track are the most obvious example of Crow's debt to early-'70s rock, with passages that seem to have EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY stamped all over them. The cheesecake inner-booklet photos and incongruous presence of Gwyneth Paltrow on "It's Only Love"
