A.F.I.: Davey Havok (vocals): Jade Puget (guitar): Hunter (bass): Adam Carson (drums). Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California. Punk rawkers AFI exude another powerful disposition on their fifth album, The Art of Drowning. Issued on Dexter Holland's Nitro Records, AFI's quick and haughty, spiraling guitar riffs and crashing percussion make for another mishmash for single-fisted anthems for punk revivalists and enigmatic pop kids raging against the machine. Nothing short of Pennywise, D Generation, and Powerman 5000, AFI is rowdy with their old-school-inspired rants like "Ever and a Day" and "Of Greetings and Goodbyes." Frontman Davey Havok casts a rough demeanor, but certainly not anything intimidating because punk rock became friendly after the war of early-'90s grunge. The snarl and sweat are not as fashionable as it once was, but the attitude remains the same. ~ MacKenzie Wilson "My whole life is a dark room" is the sentiment expressed by AFI on the appropriately titled "The Despair Factor," and there's no denying the uniformly bleak outlook of this young band. If they made music to match, this would be a rather dull ride, but they work the contrast nicely by backing their worrisome lyrics with explosion after sonic explosion of blistering punk. AFI might be said to practice a variant of horrorcore, but not of the stylized, play-acting, Slipknot kind. Rather, the group comes off as a junior branch of the Misfits, mating the grim and the grisly with energetic, old-school punk bashing, and even a fairly conventional melodic sense. For those who think Halloween rock started with Marilyn Manson, THE ART OF DROWNING will provide a quick and infectious history lesson.
Spin (4/03, p.102) - "...DROWNING features bigger hooks, a more ornate sound, and shout-along choruses that dominate nearly every tune..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "A new level of dark meant a new level of success." Its poetic and yet has this edge about it that is enchanting. It is worth your time. Submitted by johnse7 (troy, ny) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Not much more to come This is seemingly the last of the AFI that I loved. From here on out the albums just don't have the same intensity. For any new AFI fans, try this one out, or any previous albums (especially Black Sails), to get a taste of what this band can really offer Submitted by kfkrd (Edmonton,AB,Canada) Was This Review Helpful? If you like punk you need this album. AFI's The Art of Drowning is one of AFI's best CDs. Though there are many more CDs that are older than this one, it has a good sound and is probably the last real AFI album. I mean I love them to death but Sing The Sorrow and Decemberunderground are just don't sound like them. But you need to get this CD its great. Best AFI has to offer This is one of two really good AFI albums, the other being Black Sails in the Sunset. This album is also one of my favorite albums of any band of all time. It has a little bit of everything for everyone, be it old school AFI fans, or new comers. If you've only recently heard of AFI and only know of Decemberunderground and Sing the Sorrow, I recommend you check out this album, as well as Black Sails in the Sunset. Art Of Drowning
$74.15 Recorded in the 1920's and 1930's. Recorded in the 1920's & 1930's. Liner Note Author: Richard Nevins. Released in February 2003, Kentucky Mountain Music is the type of box set that will have old-time music lovers drawing up their holiday wish-list early. A roots music novice will probably question the size and scope of the set: Why would one state, after all, need seven full discs to document its music? But devotees know that (a) Yazoo wouldn't put out anything but a quality product and (b) Kentucky holds more old-time musical riches than most states. As Richard Nevins notes, "no other state ...
