Jethro Tull's first LP-length epic is a masterpiece in the annals of progressive rock, and one of the few works of its kind that still holds up decades later. Mixing hard rock and English folk music with classical influences, set to stream-of-consciousness lyrics so dense with imagery that one might spend weeks pondering their meaning -- assuming one feels the need to do so -- the group created a dazzling tour de force, at once playful, profound, and challenging, without overwhelming the listener. The original LP was the best-sounding, best-engineered record Tull had ever released, easily capturing the shifting dynamics between the soft all-acoustic passages and the electric rock crescendos surrounding them. ~ Bruce Eder
While never as high-minded or technically facile as the likes of Yes or ELP, Tull began incorporating complex time changes, sophisticated harmonic structures, and highly developed lyrical themes on THICK AS A BRICK, the realization of the artistic growth begun on AQUALUNG. It is here that Tull finally bursts into full-blown prog-rock mode. While AQUALUNG was a group of discrete compositions united by a theme, THICK AS A BRICK consists of one extended piece that occupies the length of the album.
Lyrically, Anderson's intentions are a bit obscure here, but the sophisticated arrangements and virtuoso performances are enough to carry the show. John Evan's piano and organ are at the heart of this complex piece, which moves through an endless succession of tempos, moods, and modes in a manner similar to vintage Genesis or the aforementioned Yes, but with a grittier edge. Most importantly, the whole things flows in a cohesive fashion. THICK AS A BRICK demands close attention, but rewards the same handsomely.

5 stars The Best of Tull!
In 1972 I saw Tull perform this album live. The concert surpassed the album & that's saying A LOT! What a show! The live guitar solo which isn't on the studio album is something to experience as were the live theatrics. Evenso, the studio album was the core root of the live performance. Thick As A Brick followed Tull's earlier albums in an upward progression of quality music & thought provoking lyrics. More than just good music, the lyrical content has more than 'just something' to say. Even for those who can't relate to the depth of the lyrics, the complelling sound of Thick As A Brick will carry them along for a unique, stimulating musical ride. A MUST for any Jethro Tull collection is Thick As A Brick! Find a way to record & play the two parts continuosly. That's how it was performed live. When Ian Aderson & the band finished the performing entire song live, a thunderous standing ovation exploded & seemed to last forever. The he quietly said, 'And now for our next number' & the crowd roared for another extended period of time. The band had just played for 40+ minutes straight for their FIRST number! That's how this album should be heard.

Again Jethro Tull surprised us one more time with this album. Always staying out on the edge. This, again, is a master piece.

5 stars Ian and friends show brilliance!!!
I've listened to J Tull since 1970. I've re-discovered ALL of Ian's creations. At each listening, I search for idioms which I can play on keyboard. With MOST tunes that I listen to, I find that I can "figure them out" after a few minutes. As a testament to Tull's complexity and musical aplomb, it has taken me 30 years, little bits at a time, to learn 40% of this epic tale. I yearn to find other players interested in performing this fansastic song. I am continually astounded by Ian's brilliance as a writer of prose, music and as a performer. I have, somewhat boldly, prodicted that someday ?perhaps by 2050? Ian's music will be studied in Engilsh classes, as well as music theory. Well... that's the short version. Listen and enjoy!!!

Holes CD  (2003) Original Soundtrack

Thick As A Brick

Not surprisingly, perhaps, for a kids' movie based on an award-winning book, the soundtrack to Holes features a smart and eclectic mix of pop, hip-hop, blues, electronica, and rock, including Shaggy's "Keep'n It Real," Moby's "Honey," Keb' Mo"s "Just Like You," and not one but two songs by the Eels, "Mighty Fine Blues" and "Eyes Down." The collection keeps a strong emphasis on blues-inspired songs like Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps' "I'm Gonna Be a Wheel Someday," Pepe Deluxe's version of "Everybody Pass Me By," and North Mississippi Allstars' "Shake 'Em on Down," reflecting the gritty, rough-around-the-edges feel of the movie. Other highlights include Eagle-Eye Cherry's "Don't Give Up," Fiction Plane's "If Only," and Dr. John's "Let's Make a Better World" (the soundtrack gets points just for bothering to put someone like Dr. John on an album largely intended for children). As hip as it is fun and listenable, Holes works equally well as a soundtrack and a nicely crafted collection of music, and is just as enjoyable to listen to for kids and parents alike. ~ Heather Phares

ALTERNATIVE CHARTBUSTERS is the release from Boys.
This Japanese import contains six bonus cuts--"Teacher's Pet," "Schooldays," "Lies," "She's No Angel," "You're The Other Man," & "Silent Night" (The Yobs).
Condemned at the time for offering up little more than a straight carbon copy of its predecessor, the second Boys album has since ascended to the pantheon of power pop greats, a combination of the band's own inestimable position at the forefront of what, by early 1978, was already a burgeoning movement, and their seemingly effortless grasp of the rudiments of, indeed, a great pop song. "Brickfield Nights," the opening track (and the band's third single), is almost Spector-esque in its vision, a Wall of Sound that totally predicts all that the Ramones would later do with Spector himself, but transplants the action and emotions into a strictly English setting, a soaring paean to the lost innocence of youth, set to a transistor blast of melody. Elsewhere, "Taking On the World," the deliberately ...

Out of San Francisco, California, USA, FlexxBronco has been assaulting the West Coast (US) rock and punk scene relentlessly over the past several years merging their collective love of rock icons, punk music and drunken country-stomp sing-a-longs into one big, dirty and sexy rock and roll indulgence. What's resulted is an over the top stage show with a fusion of sound drawing comparisons to the outlaw hellbilly style of Hank III, the classic rock-punk sounds of Social Distortion and the driving rock anthems of AC/DC. The four members of Flexx Bronco are Guy Thunderbird on vocals and bass, Filthy and Vinnie Regret on guitars and Thor Bigsby beating the drums. "Every time I experience this band live, my heart pounds with ever-increasing energy, it's an orgasmic journey of rock and booze!" - Zero Magazine May '08They have been blazing a viscous DIY trail of 300+ shows over the past several years with acts such as The Bronx, Supersuckers, Throw Rag, Demented Are Go, Agent Orange, The Black Halos, Tesla, Sammy Hagar and Jetboy as well as the Van’s Warped Tour in 2006, SXSW in 2007 and multiple festival appearances. They have played in venues ranging from small bars to amphitheaters. "Whether the band is playing to five people or thousands, it has a powerful sound and contagious energy" - San Francisco Chronicle, Feb 2008.Winner of the 2008 San Francisco Bay Guardian's reader's choice award for "best punk band in the San Francisco bay area", as well as 107.7 The Bone's 2006 Battle of the Bands, Flexx Bronco has accumulated tens of thousands of votes from rock fans throughout northern California. The first EP, self-released CD titled Volume I in 2006, produced by Roger Somers (Rage Against the Machine, Rod Stewart) features tracks which have been featured on television commercials on the Fuse Network, Spike, ESPN and a variety of other cable stations. Classic Rock magazine (May 2008) raves: "Flexx Bronco's cowboy sleaze is a superior slab of macho twin-guitar swagger and gunslinger blooze."This band is not looking ...
