Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, acoustic guitar, flute); Martin Barre (guitar, descant recorder); Jeffrey Hammond (alto recorder, bass, background vocals); John Evan (piano, organ, Mellotron); Clive Bunker (drums, percussion). Recorded at Island Studios, London, England. Originally released as Reprise (2035). This reissue of AQUALUNG includes a 15-minute interview and 5 bonus tracks. The booklet contains 20 pages of lyrics, photographs and reviews. Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, acoustic guitar, flute); Martin Barre (electric guitar, descant recorder); Jeffrey Hammond (alto recorder, bass instrument, background vocals); John Evan (piano, organ, Mellotron); Clive Bunker (drums, percussion). Released at a time when a lot of bands were embracing pop-Christianity (à la Jesus Christ Superstar), Aqualung was a bold statement for a rock group, a pro-God antichurch tract that probably got lots of teenagers wrestling with these ideas for the first time in their lives. This was the album that made Jethro Tull a fixture on FM radio, with riff-heavy songs like "My God," "Hymn 43," "Locomotive Breath," "Cross-Eyed Mary," "Wind Up," and the title track. And from there, they became a major arena act, and a fixture at the top of the record charts for most of the 1970s. Mixing hard rock and folk melodies with Ian Anderson's dour musings on faith and religion (mostly how organized religion had restricted man's relationship with God), the record was extremely profound for a number seven chart hit, one of the most cerebral albums ever to reach millions of rock listeners. Indeed, from this point on, Anderson and company were compelled to stretch the lyrical envelope right to the breaking point. [In the digital age, Aqualung has gone through numerous editions, mostly owing to problems finding an original master tape when the CD boom began. When the album was issued by Chrysalis through Columbia Records in the mid-'80s, the source tape was an LP production master, and the first release was criticized for thin, tinny sound; Columbia remastered it sometime around 1987 or 1988, in a version with better sound. Chrysalis later switched distribution to Capitol-EMI, and they released a decent sounding CD. Chrysalis also issued a 25th anniversary edition in 1996.] ~ Bruce Eder The leap from 1970's BENEFIT to the following year's AQUALUNG is one of the most astonishing progressions in rock history. In the space of one album, Tull went from relatively unassuming electrified folk-rock to larger-than-life conceptual rock full of sophisticated compositions and complex, intellectual lyrical constructs. While the leap to full-blown prog-rock wouldn't be taken until a year later on THICK AS A BRICK, the degree to which Tull upped the ante here is remarkable. The lyrical concept--the hypocrisy of Christianity in England--is stronger than on most other '70s conceptual efforts, but it is ultimately the music that makes the album. Tull's winning way with a riff was never so arresting as on the chugging "Locomotive Breath," or the character studies "Cross Eyed Mary" and "Aqualung," which portray believably seedy participants in Ian Anderson's story. The fable imagery of "Mother Goose" and the vitriolic anti-authoritarian sentiments of "Wind Up" both serve notice of Anderson's willful iconoclasm and his disillusionment with the spiritual traditions to which he was born. Varied but cohesive, AQUALUNG is widely regarded as Tull's finest hour. The leap from 1970's BENEFIT to the following year's AQUALUNG is one of the most astonishing progressions in rock history. Jethro Tull Aqualung Songs Aqualung Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews terrible remaster great album.. but the worst digital remaster i've ever heard!! awful! they should let Rhino re-issue these 70's Tull albums and do them justice Submitted by endymion65 (savannah, GA) Was This Review Helpful? fantastic, though not for everyone this is a truly fantastic title, but its not for everyone. those looking for a more hard-rock sound may be dissapointed with several of the tracks - Tull seems to purposefully alternate psychedelia with their very folk-based songs that some call deviations or filler. I myself love the folk-type songs best of all, but the rock fan may be let down. Submitted by nancy (Southern USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good, but not Tull's crowning achievement As Ian pointnd out in the interview on this disc, AQUALUNG is not Jethro Tull's crowning achievement. If you listen to later albums like THICK AS A BRICK, A PASSION PLAY, MINSTREL IN THE GALLERY, SONGS FROM THE WOOD and HEAVY HORSES, you'll realize that AQUALUNG, like all the other Tull albums, was just a step in the band's musical development. I think Jethro Tull's music got more intricate with each album they made. AQUALUNG was a very important album in Jethro Tull's career, but don't think that they stopped having creative ideas since. Not the best version Beware. If you're buying this for the bonus BBC tracks, don't.
All three tracks transfers on this are incredibly mediocre. All are available on other Tull official releases and in outstanding quality in comparison, unedited and without John Peel's intro. Submitted by mowdamowda (Tone-in-Oz) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great album... Although some of the songs aren't in my taste, this is a truly great album. The highlights for me are: "Aqualung," "Cross-Eyed Mary," "Cheap Day Return," "Hymn 43," and my favorite, "Locomotive Breath".
And, like another reviewer has stated: the remastering is crappy. The tracks aren't mixed very well, and the volume level is too low. Submitted by Julian (Las Vegas, NV) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Blink 182 Blink-182 CD (2003) Enhanced CD; Import
Aqualung
$14.29 This is the fifth studio album from US punk rockers Blink 182 following up the hugely successful 2001 release 'Take Off Your Pants & Jacket'. The album sees the band start fresh with a new mature punk sound doing away with the frat-punk they had become known for. The UK edition features 15 tracks including the single 'Feeling This', as well as 2 bonus tracks, 'Not Now' & 'Anthem' Part 2 (Live In Chicago). Includes enhanced material featuring exclusive videos created by the band! MCA. 2003.
This is an Enhanced CD which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Blink 182: Tom DeLonge (vocals, guitar); Mark Hoppus (vocals, bass); Travis Landon Barker (drums). Additional personnel includes: Robert Smith (vocals); Ken Andrews (various instruments); Roger Joseph Manning, Jr., Jon Morrical (keyboards). CD contains 2 bonus tracks. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. There comes a time in every punk's life where he or she has to grow up, or at least acknowledge that maturity is just around the corner. blink-182 put it off for as long as they could, but ten years into their career and two albums after their big breakthrough, 1999's Enema of the State, they decided to make a stab at being grown-ups for their eponymous sixth studio album. As with many self-titled albums, the trio uses this as an attempt to redefine itself, and they have considerably expanded both their sonic template and lyrical outlook on blink-182. They're still rooted in punk-pop, but even songs that stretch no further than that sound are a little darker, a little restless, reflecting the overall mood of the record. In shorthand, this is the record where blink-182 delve into post-punk, opting for some appealingly sullen moodiness, off-kilter hooks, lots of sonic textures, and even a duet with the Cure's Robert Smith. Since the trio is an inherently catchy group, this is a far cry from neo-post-punk groups like Interpol or even the dynamically hooky Hot Hot Heat, but there is a greater variety of sounds on blink-182 than on any of the trio's other albums, and the songwriting is similarly adventurous, alternating punchy, impassioned punk-pop with weirder, atmospheric pieces like "Down" and "I'm Lost Without You." If nothing on the album has the immediate impact of "All the Small Things" -- though the opener, "Feeling This," comes close -- and if, on the whole, blink-182 isn't as bracing or visceral as Dude Ranch or Enema, so be it: there's more to explore on this album than any of their other records. It's ...

$9.99 Even though she is not as well-known as many of her vocal contemporaries, those who might have crossed paths with Judy Canova aren't likely to forget her. Not only was she a remarkably gifted singer, but also an actress whose flawless comedic timing was her calling card. As precious little of her sides have been issued on compact disc, Ozark Nightingale (2004) is as definitive a statement as exists for a modern audience. ...
