The Germs defining punk live on stage at the Whiskey in 1977.
As the cover states, this set from Los Angeles punks the Germs was recorded live at the famed Whiskey a Go-Go in 1977. As lo-fi as the sound quality is here, it perfectly captures the band in all of their nihilistic sub-Stooges glory. GERMICIDE is an excercise in precision ineptitude as the Germs spit, lurch, and stumble their way through 10 songs in just over 30 minutes. When not warbling his surpisingly thoughtful (if you can make them out) lyrics of desperation and isolation, iconic lead singer Darby Crash baits the audience with monosyllabic expletives, while his band continually falls apart and puts the pieces back together. Produced and recorded by music biz Svengali Kim Fowley, the disc is an essential document of the early L.A. punk experience and one of its truest exemplars. (Trainspotters will also want to note that the band is introduced by original drummer Belinda Carlisle.)

| | Sonny Bono Inner Views CD (1967)
Germicide: Live At The Whisky, June '77
$10.05 Sonny Bono is among rock & roll's most depreciated and ironic figures. He was a multi-talented artist, producer, songwriter, and performer as well as unapologetically conservative in both his personal and political bents. The sole solo long-player of Bono's two-decade musical career, 1967's Inner Views has a title that fittingly describes its contents, which reflect the artist's sensibilities. Perhaps unintentionally, the album reinforces why Bono let his then professional partner and wife, Cher, take the vocals. The five-track collection was issued during the fall following 1967's "Summer of Love," and the pseudo-psychedelia of the 12-plus minute opening drone, "I Just Sit There," reveals that Bono was caught up in the mass-media hype that generally surrounded and subsequently misrepresented the youth-driven counterculture. His observations are spot-on, although undeniably contrived. Examples abound, such as the simplistic "Inside, outside, upside down/Everything is turning 'round/Backwards, forwards, which is right?/Black is day and white is night" and "Ring around the rosey/Your daddy's getting nosey/Mother's cooking sturgeon/Your sister's still a virgin." While no specific credits are given, conspicuously present are Hal Blaine (drums) and additional Los Angeles-based session heavies. In fact, it is probable that many of the ...
| | Tony Coe Coe-Existence CD (2005) (Import)
Germicide: Live At The Whisky, June '77
$12.85 Vinyl LP version also available directly from the label at www.whatmusic.comIn the 1970s Howard Lambert spent a lot of time in jazz clubs in England, enjoying great nights of jazz. However, it concerned him that none of this music was being recorded, as record companies were exclusively recording pop music. So Howard decided that he would form an independent jazz label to capture, for posterity, some of the excellent british artists' offerings. To his amazement, he discovered that there were, in the commercial record business, several serious jazz aficionados who were willing to give time and effort to assisting this cause. Initially, Howard recorded a series entitled 'British Jazz Artists - Vol...', and featured artists such as Terry Smith, Tony Lee, Martin Drew, Bill Le Sage and John Taylor.Internationally-renowned tenor/soprano saxophonist and clarinettist Tony Coe has incredible credentials - Clarke-Boland Big Band, Derek Bailey's Company, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Mike Gibbs to name but a few. He has composed several film scores and was the first non-american to win the coveted danish Jazzpar prize in 1995. 'Coe-Existence' was recorded at the BBC Studios in London in June 1978 and the liner notes come from Humphrey Lyttleton, with whom Coe began his career. Tony Coe - Coe-ExistenceTony Coe is one of the most remarkable and brilliant musicians in the world. The sheer range of ...
| | Monsieur Leroc I'm Not Young But I Need The Money CD (2006)
Germicide: Live At The Whisky, June '77
$11.99 Sugar Hill Harlem, NYC, by way of Stuttgart Germany: Monsieur Leroc keeps his Piano in nearly the exact same place in which Duke Ellington wrote his classic "Take the A Train". The only difference being one apartment floor in the old St. Nicholas Ave. building which they both have called home. This is where the neo-soul movement of today puts on its dancing shoes. In his third release, Monsieur Leroc pleads guilty with the working class title "I'm not young, but I need the money", but the sympathy stops there. Some where between DJ Shadow, and Jamie Lidell, Leroc doodlebugs into precise form with the albums opener "Cooley McCoolsen". You quickly get the idea that Leroc just wants you to get some, or get something. "I'm not young, but I need the money" is deconstructed and reassembled by Leroc in his home studio in Harlem and also features many guest vocalists and musicians that add all new elements to what has now become a signature Monsieur Leroc sound. Guests include Josh Fischel from "Bargain Music", Los Angeles MC's: ...
