Bach: Sacred Music In Latin, Vol. 1
$8.99 Original score by Marty Stewart, Kristin Wilkinson, Larry Paxton.
Sure, the movie was no Sling Blade, even if directed by the one and only Billy Bob Thornton. But let's face it, they took two hours outta the thing! All the griping aside, the score, composed and performed by country music renaissance man Marty Stuart -- and his collaborating band members Kristin Wilkinson and Larry Paxton -- is something else completely. Comprised of 23 tracks, Stuart's score does sound like soundtrack music, but no matter. He and his sextet have taken the drama of the film's text and created an aural theater of the American West. At the heart of each theme is a core of mandolin, viola, bass, guitar, accordion, piano, and percussion. Orchestrations ride ambiently in the background, highlighting tension and drama. In "Edge of the World," cornets play at the music's outermost edge, hinting at a red Sonoran sunset. In another place, guitars, both strummed and soloed upon, create an impressionistic picture of a campfire jam session. Elsewhere, "Strawberry Tango, Part One and Two" features a full horn and string section painting the atmosphere at a cantina dance from its wild beginnings until its sultry ending. Daniel Lanois, who scored Thornton's Sling Blade (well, it actually sounds as if he threw a bunch of leftover studio bits on a tape for the movie), makes a return appearance here with an actual song. The track "Porque" features the stirring vocals of Raul Malo of the Mavericks, who contributed the lyrics to the selection. It's a sad, romantic ballad. Lost love drips from the cowboy's hat, regret drapes itself in tears in his shaded eyes, and he stands out in the rain singing to no one. Also, homage is paid to Stuart's greatest influence and benefactor, the daddy of bluegrass ...

$8.85 A no-frills CD reissue of what was already a pretty frills-free vinyl anthology from the '70s, The Very Best of the Classics IV is not geared for the obsessive fan of Dennis Yost and crew, even assuming such people exist. The sound is serviceable, the liner notes non-existent, and the skimpy 26-and-a-half-minute running time is just barely on the right side of a gyp. On the other hand, for the casual fan who just wants decent-sounding versions of "Spooky," "Traces," and "Stormy" -- this Atlanta-based group's three mellow blue-eyed soul hits -- this is an inexpensive way to do just that. The other seven tracks contain no hidden ...
| | Pops Roundup / Fiedler, Boston Pops Orchestra CD (1962)
Bach: Sacred Music In Latin, Vol. 1
$7.55 Pops Roundup presents a Walt Disney view of the west in which soaring strings and horns evoke images from western movies rather than the actual west. The dynamic music features all-new arrangements of classic western songs as well as themes from television, films, and Broadway shows. Woodblocks create the clippity-clop of horses' hooves, and other uncommon (for an orchestra) instruments such as harmonica and accordion crop up in places. An array of odd sounds, from whistles to gunshots, add to the strong visual quality of the music. Two long medleys of western television themes and fiddle reels bookend ...

$17.09 Songs of Forbidden Love and Forgotten Dances(Randy Pile with Susan Barrett-oboe and English horn) Love and Music... they are the two wings of the soul.   -Memoires, Hector Berlioz, 1865. Love has been a central theme in music throughout history; melody expressed with love or melody as an expression of love. Colored by varying harmonic backdrops, it has been both a topic and a feeling, clearly presented, or veiled in a world of metaphors and multiple meanings, through the sensible or the sensual. Given life through rhythm, which remains fundamental, it often finds expression in dance. While the dances change, rhythm remains essential, and Spain proves rich in her heritage of both. Music has the power to express beyond mere words, to bypass the intellect and speak directly to the heart. Able to conquer fear, soothe anger and inspire love, it lives in the realm of the fantastic. It is not mere fantasy, but a reality of potential. Feelings of love and confidence abound in music, but those of fear and anger also live within the boundaries. While on one listening, a piece may inspire the fullness of nostalgic happiness, the next hearing may equally prove the emptiness of forlorn hope. Music is a participation art which elevates the spirit. The musician brings to the performance his feelings, dreams, desires and concerns, as does the most detached listener. The music on this recording strikes chords, both fun and profound, that will resonate with varying degrees of intensity in the heart of the listener. Much of it is derived from vocal forms based on dance rhythms. Texts have been provided for the ...
