In OPEN LETTER Ralph Towner continues to explore his personal musical universe, his composition and improvisation combining in a unified whole. With a thoroughly personal sound and approach, he continues to bridge the expanse between jazz lyricism and classical grace. Towner's playing, on both classical and 12-string guitars, is direct and seemingly effortless in drawing the listener into the music. "Wistful Thinking," "Short and Stout," and his read of Bill Evans' composition "Waltz for Debby" transcend the conventions of the solo guitar. Synthesizers are another important element in Towner's sonic lexicon, and another area where he has developed a voice of his own.
