A charming children's score by David Michael Frank, Kin in Aladdin's Palace boasts an epic scope uncommon to the family film genre -- even if the City of Prague Philharmonic's performance doesn't quite achieve the cumulative power the music demands, it's still a far more impressive effort than you might expect. Frank employs a series of ethnic melodies and instruments to capture the film's mythical Arabian setting, vividly evoking the vast panoramas of the desert milieu -- the themes are clever and the arrangements are complex, at times suggesting a grown-up adventure more than a kid-friendly B-movie. However, with only 34 brief tracks, the score never fully stretches out, and Frank introduces a number of memorable thematic ideas that move by all too quickly -- still, it's worth a listen for kids of all ages. ~ Jason Ankeny

Ragtime-the musical genre-is one of the principal crossroads amongst African-American rhythms, European-American songs and New World sensibility at the turn of the 20th century. As such, it works as a perfect metaphor for this mega-musical that takes on this whole wild and wooly nation. Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, whose prior collaborations include "Once Upon This Island" and "My Favorite Year," have crafted an ambitious, tumultuous, but upbeat American epic based on the E.L. Doctorow bestseller. Taking their cues from Scott Joplin, Stephen Foster, minstrels, vaudeville and of course their Broadway predecessors, Ahrens and Flaherty effortlessly evoke another time while drawing parallels to another, strangely familiar turn of the century place.

This double-CD set is a bit different than Cristian Vogel's usual experimental techno, as it leans significantly more toward the experimental side than the techno side. Vogel still had the dancefloor in mind, albeit not the kind found in nightclubs. In fact, this set culls music scores created for two of Swiss choreographer Gilles Jobin's dance pieces. The hourlong "Double Deux" (disc one) is a convincing piece of very experimental techno on its own right -- imagining choreographed movements to it simply gives it extra spice. The eight-part suite does not entirely eschew the beat, and fans of Super_Collider will still hear familiar sounds, textures, and patterns. However, Vogel clearly put an emphasis on deconstructing rhythm and reinventing his own approach. The result is a mutant form of electronic music, abstract yet noisy, miles away from the minimalism of most sound artists, yet not as overwhelming as a noisician's creation. Even more interesting is the single-part, 30-minute piece "Delicado" found on disc two. Here, Vogel develops abstracted themes on a wider scale, relying on a broader sound palette and better defined ambiences. ...
