The members of the Nuclear Whales Saxophone Orchestra are not unaware of the comic possibilities of a band that plays nothing but saxophones, and all seven varieties, from the 18-inch sopranino to the six-foot, eight-inch contrabass. They exploit those possibilities by filling their repertoire with fruity oldies like "Alabamy Bound," "Sweet Georgia Brown," and "Darktown Strutter's Ball," not to mention the absurdly melodramatic "Also Sprach Zarathustra." But they are also capable of subtle swinging on Duke Ellington and George Gershwin compositions. This compilation draws from their five previous albums and adds two new recordings, "Kramat" and "Amazing Grace," as well as re-recordings of "Harlem Nocturne" and "Also Sprach Zarathustra." It provides a sense of the range of their performances and of the many sounds that can come out of a saxophone. ~ William Ruhlmann

$17.69 On their second album the band's ragtime bounce is still intact, but country blues share the billing, all presented with a cleaner mix that shows just how impressive the band's instrumental chops are. Pete Bernhard's songwriting moves in a more serious, more insightful direction here. Drinking and hard times still figure heavily in the songs, but mindless indulgence has been replaced with a consciousness that puts the behavior in a broader social context. The good time music is tempered by sober lyrics rooted in the usual social concerns of a singer/songwriter. "North Carolina" is a country blues with some impressive guitar picking from Cooper McBean, a starkly traditional "she done me wrong song" delivered in a straightforward manner that intensifies the hurt Bernhard sings about. "Man Tap" is a tale of hard times and drinking, but this time Bernhard treats the subject with a more solemn attitude, acknowledging that while booze may provide temporary relief, ...
