Average Rating: List All 9 Reviews HAROLD & MAUDE IS A CLASSIC BLACK COMEDY! Harold and Maude film Harold & Maude is one of the most outrageous and hillarious movies I have ever seen. Harold is a poor little rich kid. His mother is a prominent socialite who doesn't pay much, or if any, attention to him. To get her attention, Harold stages the most bizarre fake suicides. In one scene, Harold is hanging from the ceiling with a noose around his neck. His mother looks at him briefly while phoning her hairdresser and says, "I SUPPOSE you think this is very funny Harold!" Harold has no friends and is a lost soul, until he meets Maude, a soon to be 80 year old woman. She teaches him to have fun and enjoy life. Maude steals cars and burns rubber in them. Her reasoning is that she is just reminding people not to get too attached to material things, "here today, gone tomorrow" She is a true free spirit and nothing phases her, even the police! It's been over 25 years ago that I first saw HAROLD AND MAUDE in college, and burst out of the theatre full of inspiration and a brand new zest for life. There's never been a better movie that shows us how to love ourselves and to love our own lives and to love the people whose lives we touch. I am saddened when people put this creative and enlightening movie in the category of a May-December romance. It really isn't at all. If you have trouble with it the first time through, be sure to watch it again and again and absorb more each time. Harold and Maude review I have never seen anything like this film. Its original, unique and interesting. It features one of the most unusual pairs in the movie history, and proves love has no boundaries. The director Hal Ashby and writer Colin Higgins have made a film that is original directed and scripted, and it is unusual and funny. It is now wonder why it's one of the original cult classics. Cat Stevens musical score provides the film a nice atmosphere. Along with "Being There", "Coming Home" and "The Last Detail", this is Hal Ashby's best picture.
