91 minute feature film DVD starring Cyril Cusack and Ellen Geer. This whimsical black comedy became a cult favorite, tapping into some inexplicable early 1970s zeitgeist. Harold is a rich teenager obsessed with slashed wrists, self-inflicted gunshot wounds, personal vivisection, drowning, hanging, and being burned alive--just to annoy his mother. Maude is a poor 79-year-old optimist who has a peerless affinity for all things living. Together they attend strangers' wakes and find in each other a most unlikely romantic partner. In the days before home video, when access to anything but first-run Hollywood movies was limited to repertory houses and college film societies, Hal Ashby's HAROLD AND MAUDE achieved cult status and became a surprise hit. In a broad sense, the film is a simple love story about how opposites attract--only, this time around, he's 19 and she's 79. Harold, played with deadpan humor by Bud Cort (M*A*S*H), is under extreme pressure from his overbearing mother, Mrs. Chasen (Vivian Pickles, in a performance that is a sheer delight), to enter the dating world. Unfortunately, the shy and morose Harold would rather spend his time attending the funerals of complete strangers. It is at one of these where he meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), who has the spunk and energy of a teenager. Maude is convinced that Harold needs to come out of his shell and enjoy life, so she brings him into hers.
The taboo relationship between Harold and Maude, created by screenwriter Colin Higgins, embodied the spirit of an experimental generation guided by the mantra "If it feels good, do it." The love affair between the film's two eccentrics remains one of Hollywood's most unexpected, but tender, romances. The soundtrack, with songs by Cat Stevens, provides an effective thematic bridge as Harold crosses from extended adolescence into manhood. Theatrical release: December 20, 1971
HAROLD AND MAUDE was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1997.
Ruth Gordon's first movie appearance was in CAMILLE, in 1915.
Colin Higgins's script was inspired by the thesis he wrote for UCLA's graduate screenwriting program. Harold And Maude Quotes/Excerpts: "You're so good with people."--Harold (Bud Cort)
"Aww, they're my species!"--Maude (Ruth Gordon) Harold And Maude Reviews: "...An acquired taste, but connoisseurs will discover a supremely endearing love story..."

Brilliant, funny and original! I have never seen anything like this film. Its original, unique and interesting. It features one of the most unusual pairs in the movie history, and proves love has no boundaries.
The director Hal Ashby and writer Colin Higgins have made a film that is original directed and scripted, and it is unusual and funny. It is now wonder why it's one of the original cult classics.
Cat Stevens musical score provides the film a nice atmosphere.
Along with "Being There", "Coming Home" and "The Last Detail", this is Hal Ashby's best picture. Submitted by a reviewer (Stavanger, Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
if you're of the type... who appreciate the occasional plunge into the absurd, the whimsical, the poignant, or appreciate jarringly dark humor, harold and maude is a film that should certainly win over a role in your collection. hal ashby's quirky feature about a may-december romance between a morose 19 year old from a (quite emotionally numbed) monied family, and his awakening to life via the infiltration and excitations of a freespirited and expressive mentor may seem a bit morbid on the surface--if harmlessly so--but quickly grows into an enriching and charmingly funny film that will reward any viewer who may enjoy both a bit of the offbeat and a modicum of intelligent satire in their movie diet. regardless of your view of cat stevens, i enjoy his score fully, and it's applied well within the film's context. very nice, hazy-textural cinematography of california sites will (hopefully) look almost as fine as when seeing the gorgeous compositions theatrically: the fullscreen version (as on vhs) seems tight and removes some of the mellow atmospherics. if you've seen being there (another fine ashby film), or such obviously disparate features as easy rider, hellzapoppin', the holy mountain, don't look now, woodstock, fargo, head, et al, you'll certainly like this film...it's just as much a one-of-a-kind treasure. Harold And Maude film
$10.29 Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern ...

$16.69 BEING THERE is based on Jerzy Kosinski's short comic novel about a simpleton, Chance (Peter Sellers), raised in isolation whose only education came from watching TV. When he's forced out of the house where he worked as a gardener by the death of the wealthy recluse who raised him from infancy, he's fortuitously struck by a limousine carrying Eve Rand (Shirley MacLaine), the wife of a wealthy industrialist. He's mistaken, because of his well-tailored suits, for a man of means and taken to dinner with her husband, Ben Rand (Melvyn Douglas). There, ...
