Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re A 1970s family must come to terms with the suicide of their youngest daughter. The four remaining sisters are thrown into a cloud of depression that breeds an unhealthy obsession with death. Based on the 1993 novel by Jeffrey Eugenides, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES tells the dreamlike tale of the Lisbons, a family living in a sheltered 1970s suburbia. When Cecilia (Hannah Hall), the youngest of the five teenage Lisbon daughters, inexplicably commits suicide, the rest of the family--Mr. Lisbon (James Woods), an awkward high school math teacher; Mrs. Lisbon (Kathleen Turner), a stern, humorless housewife; and the four remaining sisters: Lux (Kirsten Dunst), Bonnie (Chelse Swain), Mary (A.J. Cook), and Therese (Leslie Hayman)--recedes into a morbid cloud of repression and denial. As the girls are forced to retreat from everyday life by their conservative mother, they become the subject of fascination for a group of neighborhood boys, who narrate the story and hope to rescue the girls from their listless confinement.
The first feature by director-screenwriter Sofia Coppola (Francis Ford Coppola's daughter), THE VIRGIN SUICIDES is a mesmerizingly atmospheric film that perfectly captures both the moody tone of the book and the light-saturated feel of the 1970s. Dunst gives a standout performance as the promiscuous Lux, who becomes the sole obsession of high school ladies' man Trip Fontaine (Josh Hartnett). The movie also includes cameos by Danny DeVito and Scott Glenn. In addition to songs by Heart and Todd Rundgren, the film features an evocative score by the French duo Air. Virgin Suicides Quotes/Excerpts: "You're a stone fox."--Trip Fontaine (Josh Hartnett) to Lux Lisbon (Kirsten Dunst) Virgin Suicides Reviews: "...There are nice moments throughout, and Coppola has done a deft job evoking the spirit of the film's period and suburban setting..."
-- Lael Loewenstein, Box Office "...Sofia Coppola shows an impressive maturity and an assured skill....The result is a highly affecting film unafraid to exact an emotional toll..."
-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "...THE VIRGIN SUICIDES is Sofia Coppola's first film....She has the courage to play it in a minor key....She is content with the air of mystery and loss that hangs in the air like bitter poignancy..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "...This sublimely confident and poetic debut has the power to endure..." -- 4 out of 5 stars
-- Dorian Lynskey, Total Film "...The director captures the novel's intrinsic nostalgia for the loss of adolescence..."
-- Chris Chang, Film Comment "...Coppola does a lovely job of staging the romance..."
-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "...The movie's best moments have an inspired feeling of playfulness and freedom matched by Ms. Dunst's smart, beguiling performance as Lux Lisbon..."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...[The film is] disarmingly wispy....[The virgins] are blessed with great luminosity..."
-- Glenn Kenny, Premiere

$8.55 In Tim Burton's stylish, creepy retelling of the classic Washington Irving story, SLEEPY HOLLOW, Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is a squeamish, bookish 18th century New York City investigator sent to a small town in lower Westchester county to look into three mysterious decapitations. When the always rational Crane arrives at the little Dutch village, he finds that most of the townsfolk believe the culprit to be the Headless Horseman, the ghost of a monstrous Hessian soldier (Christopher Walken), who seems to be mysteriously tied in to one of the town's most prominent ...

$10.29 In M. Night Shyamalan's THE SIXTH SENSE, Bruce Willis plays Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a successful Philadelphia child psychologist who is haunted by the sudden reappearance and suicide of a former patient. Months later Dr. Crowe encounters Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), a troubled, withdrawn young boy who bears a striking similarity to his earlier patient. Dr. Crowe is compelled to help Cole, not only for the boy's sake, but for his own redemption. As Dr. Crowe struggles to determine what torments Cole, he must also come to terms with his increasingly distant relationship to his wife (Olivia Williams). Meanwhile, Cole is unable to describe the horrible things he sees even to his worried mother (Toni Collette). The scene where Cole finally tells Dr. Crowe about his supernatural secret is one of the 1990s most quoted and well-known cinematic moments.

$7.95 Gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride, and lust--these are the seven deadly sins that are being punished with unimaginable cruelty and calculation by an enigmatic killer in David Fincher's bleak thriller SEVEN. Set in a perpetually gloomy unnamed city, the film follows Somerset (Morgan Freeman), a retiring police detective, as he experiences his final week on the job, reluctantly working with assertive newcomer Mills (Brad Pitt). When an obese man is found brutally murdered in his home, the seasoned Somerset realizes this is no ordinary killing--someone tortured him because of his appetite. Slayings that reflect the sins of greed and sloth soon follow, leading Somerset and Mills on a desperate search to find the mysterious John Doe, who is responsible for these methodical murders. As the case builds to a startling conclusion, both Somerset and Mills become more involved than they ever could have imagined.

$6.29 Michael Ritchie directs this freewheeling satire, which recounts a bizarre series of events that occurred in Channelview, Texas, in the early 1990s. The made-for-HBO comedy tells the story of Wanda Holloway (Holly Hunter), a ridiculously devoted mother who will stop at nothing to help her daughter Shanna (Frankie Ingrassia) become a high school cheerleader. Bothered by the annoying presence of fellow mother Verna Heath (Elizabeth Ruscio), Wanda is eventually driven to thoughts of murder. After recruiting her dim-witted ex-brother-in-law, Terry Harper (Beau Bridges), to help carry out the task, Terry's conscience gets the better of him and he works with the police in order to capture enough evidence to arrest Wanda. The resulting media frenzy ...

Virgin Suicides DVD
$11.79 In the near future in a Paris, France, made of Plexiglas, aerodynamic steel beams, and rainslicked surfaces, a sinister plot unfolds: it's one honest cop (voiced by Daniel Craig) against an evil corporatocracy, corrupt scientists, and the mob, as he uses his wits and grit to rescue a brilliant, beautiful female geneticist who has been kidnapped. What he learns on his rescue mission challenges his most hard-boiled preconceptions about who's really running things.
Christian Volckman's first feature film is rendered in astonishing black-and-white "motion capture" animation that continually yields inventive and subtle visual surprises--car chases take on cosmic proportions, cigarette smoke engulfs an entire room like a lovely wraith, and the already beautiful Parisian skyline becomes a dizzying, jeweled spectacle. A descendent of classic science-fiction tech-noir like BLADERUNNER, Volckman's film envisions the near future as a cold and heartless place where corporations are supreme and surface beauty is everything; whole scenes are constructed from reflections in nighttime ...
