1997's HELIOSELF is Papas Fritas' second album. Since recording its debut, the trio had relocated to the North Shore of Boston and set up a rehearsal and recording space in an old schoolhouse. Again, Papas Fritas self-recorded the music and took the resulting tracks into a full-service studio for mixing and sweetening. The results are more expansive than the band's audacious debut album, due in equal part to this new setup and to the experience gained in the interim.
Papas Fritas understands and loves pop music. From the dreamy and propulsive "Say Goodbye" to the shameless bubble-gum of "Sing About Me," these songs are fun, inventive, and loaded with the happiest backup vocals of the '90s. Whereas other pop practitioners draw from '60s and '70s sources but sound merely accurate, Papas Fritas is unafraid to push for something more. HELIOSELF is the band's own 12-song hit parade.

Rolling Stone (5/29/97, p.51) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...HELIOSELF's smooth piano and organ recall '70s soft rock, while the album's vocal interplay harks back to '60s power pop....Often wistful but never maudlin..." Entertainment Weekly (5/2/97, p.60) - "This Boston trio crafts some indie-pop dynamos on their second album. And while the band shares mike duty, it's drummer Shivika Asthana's pensive vocals that astonish..." - Rating: A- NME (Magazine) (5/31/97, p.56) - "...Papas Fritas write ridiculously catchy songs which include things...which normally would compel you to take your own life rather than admit to liking them, but here almost manage to rehabilitate the word `groovy'." Helioself
$11.45 Sounding like a Big Star album recorded in Sebadoh's practice space, this exploration into '60s rock mythology is the one that sealed Guided By Voices' lo-fi legend. From their hideaway in Dayton, Ohio, Guided By Voices previously released six albums with almost no distribution (the first five, in fact, had none at all) and minuscule production values before gaining the critical attention that would blossom with BEE THOUSAND. The production remains maddeningly haphazard here, but the seemingly tossed-off melodies are ever grander. And with the help of a Breeders' cover of their "Shocker In Gloomtown," Guided By Voices are now quite ready for indie-rock stardom.
What voices guide songwriter Robert Pollard? He kept his gig as an elementary-school teacher until around the time of BEE THOUSAND, ...
| | Mr Bungle Mr. Bungle CD (1991)
Helioself
$7.99 Although Mike Patton found fame and fortune as the singer for Faith No More (with their 1989 breakthrough release THE REAL THING), he was first a member of Mr. Bungle. Instead of quitting his former band when he accepted FNM's vocal offer, Patton decided to keep both projects going simultaneously. In the ...
| | Yo La Tengo And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out CD (2000)
Helioself
$10.15 Principally recorded at Alex The Great, Nashville, Tennessee and The Pigeon Club, Hoboken, New Jersey.
On its 10th, and undoubtedly sexiest album, Yo La Tengo creates a smoky, sonic novella to love and lovers, a lonesome pop record as beautifully stark as it is happy, and as full of detailed nooks and crannies as its riddling title implies. Songs like "Our Way to Fall," "Last Days of Disco" and especially "You Can Have It All" are simple pop love notes destined to become standards in some brave romantic world better than ours (if they are diary entries from the Kaplan/Hubley marriage, that is one happy union).
The farfisa/guitar ...
| | Sugarcubes Life's Too Good CD (1988)
Helioself
$9.79 LIFE'S TOO GOOD introduced the world to the highly unusual charms of Iceland's Sugarcubes, setting off the meteoric rise of singer Bjork, whose otherworldly vocal gift soon become a staple of pop music's wilder side. The album's clear production and economical accompaniment set the stage perfectly for the vocal interplay of Bjork and co-vocalist Einer Orn, whose insane rants ...
| | Richard Hell Blank Generation CD (1977)
Helioself
$10.35 Richard Hell And The Voidoids: Richard Hell (vocals, electric bass); Robert Quine, Ivan Julian (electric guitar, background vocals); Marc Bell (drums).
BLANK GENERATION is now widely regarded as one of the seminal points in the punk explosion, along with the Sex Pistols' NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS HERE'S THE SEX PISTOLS and The Ramones debut. It is a startling, urgent record filled with the pent-up frustration and nihilistic despair that earmarked the potency of the late '70s ...
| | Mountain Goats Tallahassee CD (2002)
Helioself
$12.95 The very first album by the Mountain Goats, 1995's ZOPILOTE MACHINE, started with a song called "Alpha Incipiens." Throughout leader John Darnielle's prolific career, numerous songs with the word "Alpha" cropped up on Mountain Goat releases, along with hints that the songs could be pieced together to form a story. But it was not until 2002's TALLAHASSEE, the Mountain Goats' first album for 4AD Records, that Darnielle spelled out the narrative in full: TALLAHASSEE is the ...

| | Carly Simon Moonlight Serenade CD (2005)
Helioself
$8.85 Since 1981's TORCH, Carly Simon has recorded three more collections of pre-rock standards. 2005's MOONLIGHT SERENADE is the best of the lot, and one of the best albums of standards yet recorded by a singer of Simon's generation. It beats the pants off of similar sets by Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart, for example. For one thing, Simon is simply a great singer, even at this late stage in her career; she's taken care of her instrument, ...
