This short-lived L.A. band came about after the popular cuddle core band Cub broke up. Singer Lisa Marr and drummer Lisa G moved from Vancouver to L.A. and formed the very similar Buck with guitarist Pepper Berry. The main feature of both Cub and Buck is Lisa Marr's slightly rough, but also intensely sweet voice, which is almost irresistible. For anyone who has fallen for Kim Shattuck of the Muffs sugary-sounding snarl, Lisa Marr's voice is not quite as harsh, but they could easily be mistaken for one another. Marr's voice sounds fantastic on highlights like the lovely pop tune "My Fascination" and the Ramones-like rumble of "(She's In) Another World." There's also a pissed-off, antiwork tune, "American Express," that one might not expect from these former cuddle core gals. Not every song is great, but mostly this is a solid effort from one very cute-looking band. ~ Adam Bregman

| | Yo La Tengo And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out CD (2000)
Buck CD music
$10.15 Principally recorded at Alex The Great, Nashville, Tennessee and The Pigeon Club, Hoboken, New Jersey.
On its 10th, and undoubtedly sexiest album, Yo La Tengo creates a smoky, sonic novella to love and lovers, a lonesome pop record as beautifully stark as it is happy, and as full of detailed nooks and crannies as its riddling title implies. Songs like "Our Way to Fall," "Last Days of Disco" and especially "You Can Have It All" are simple pop love notes destined to become standards in some brave romantic world better than ours (if they are diary entries from the ...

| | Mr T Experience Love Is Dead CD (1996)
Buck songs
$10.79 As the Ramones, Buzzcocks and countless other pop-punk masters have proved, perfect pop isn't quite as easy as it seems. One needs a good sense of humor, and a strong balance of chops and songwriting. Silly song titles don't hurt either.
The Mr. T Experience combine these qualities with breakneck speeds and monster riffs, on songs penned by a guy named Dr. Frank--what ...
| | Nightcrawlers Little Black Egg CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Buck album
$16.65 At a glance it might be assumed that this is the definitive Nightcrawlers retrospective; after all, it has 24 tracks, by a band that only did a few singles and an album. It does contain everything from their sole LP (also called The Little Black Egg, from 1967) and a few non-LP singles and unreleased cuts. However, there are curious imperfections that prevent this from being a definitive retrospective. The B-side of their first 45, "Marie," isn't here, and more problematically, their 1967 single "My Butterfly"/"Today I'm Happy" is not included, either. Nor does it include the two singles by spin-off band Conlon & the Crawlers. Yes, the back sleeve does note that this has "all the recordings by the original band," which presumably means there was a deliberate decision to exclude all material that did not feature that lineup. The problem is, "My Butterfly" -- an incredibly accurate early Who imitation complete with high harmonies, ringing guitar, and airplane take-off instrumental breaks -- is their best song other than "The Little Black Egg." Both ...
| | Fountains Of Wayne Welcome Interstate Managers CD (2003)
Buck CD music
$11.39 Fountains Of Wayne was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "Stacy's Mom" was nominated for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Following a four-year hiatus that found Fountains of Wayne going from Atlantic Records to S-Curve Records, New Jersey's favorite power-pop outfit delivers WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS, the band's third opus. FOW does an excellent job of capturing the suburban zeitgeist that dates back to the band's name (derived from a Garden State backyard fixtures emporium) and carrying on from 1999's excellent UTOPIA PARKWAY.
Wielding boatloads of hooks and harmonies, Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood delight with songs about high school sweethearts (the melancholy "Hackensack"), a good woman's love ...

| | Jacques Brel L'Homme De La Mancha (Vol. 13) CD (1998) (Import) Remastered; France
Buck music CDs
$18.39 The original 1965 French cast recording of the book of L'HOMME DE LA MANCHA (THE MAN OF LA MANCHA) is some of Jacques Brel's most accomplished, most enduring music. Features 13 tracks including "Dulcinea," "Sana Amour," and "Gloria."
Considering it contains one of Jacques Brel's best-loved performances -- not to mention one of the few cover versions ever to pass his lips -- this original cast recording is one of the most obscure releases in the singer's regular catalog, at least so far as Anglo-American ears are concerned. In France, it's another matter entirely. Staged at Paris' Theatre des Champs-Elysees during 1968, and co-starring Joan Diener (of the Broadway production), Dario Moreno (replaced on the recording by Jean-Claude Calon), and Armand Mestral, this French-language adaptation of the well-known Man of La Mancha marked Brel's mainstream theatrical debut and was, by all accounts, a roaring success. He performs seven of the 13 songs on the LP, including duets with Diener and Jean Mauvais, but only one truly solo piece, a stirring, and increasingly ...

| | Drop Dead Gorgeous Be Mine Valentine CD (2006) Extended Play
Buck album
$7.99 Drop Dead, Gorgeous' label touted their EP Be Mine, Valentine as "the ultimate break-up album." This is true, in a sense: any relationship that had this record in constant rotation would almost certainly breakup. With half of the band still in high school (and together ...
| | Reinhard Blaire Somewhere In Between CD (2009)
Buck CD music
$12.65 Blaire Reinhard is a New Jersey born singer-songwriter-pianist who has gained recognition as a recording artist through exposure on television and film, as well as through her live performances with The Blaire Reinhard Band. This LP, “Somewhere In Between,” is a collection of a few of Blaire’s earlier recordings that you may have heard on TV. The post-breakup ballad “Over and Over” played several times on the popular series “Felicity” on WB. The lonely, gospel hymn “Amen” was featured in a poignant scene in the drama series “Over There” on FX, and “Still Living” was on the WB show “Everwood”. More recently, the song “Walking On” was featured on the season 5 premiere of “So You Think You Can Dance” ...
